REM Behavior Disorder (RBD) - sleepdisorderchannel
Rapid eye movement behavior disorder is an uncommon sleep disorder first described in 1986.
It is, however, known to occur during rapid eye movement sleep, which is characterized by brain activity patterns that resemble wakefulness and which has been documented with polysomnography and other sleep tests.
Rapid eye movement behavior disorder is characterized by significant submental (under the chin) and limb muscle tone.

Rapid eye movement behavior disorder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder, or RBD, was first described by Schenck et al.
Such disorders include sleepwalking and sleep terrors, which are associated with other stages of sleep, nocturnal seizures and obstructive sleep apnea which can induce arousals from REM sleep associated with complex behaviours.
This is unsurprising, as both RBD and narcolepsy involve dissociation of sleep states probably arising from a disruption of sleep control mechanisms.

Rapid eye movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rapid eye movement (REM) is the stage of sleep characterized by rapid saccadic movements of the eyes.
The lack of REM atonia causes REM Behavior Disorder; sufferers act out the movements occurring in their dreams.
The eye movements associated with REM are generated by the pontine nucleus with projections to the superior colliculus and are associated with PGO (pons, geniculate, occipital) waves.

Rapid eye movement (REM) is the stage of sleep during which the most vivid (though not all) dreams occur.
During this stage, the eyes move rapidly, and the activity of the brain's neurons is quite similar to that during waking hours.
Rapid eye movement behavior disorder or REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder in which sleep paralysis, which normally disables the voluntary muscles during REM sleep, fails to occur.

Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder is characterized by dramatic behaviors during sleep that are associated with vivid dreams.
Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder is associated with several neurologic conditions, including narcolepsy and degenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease [8], multiple system atrophy [9], dementia with Lewy bodies [10, 11], and olivo-ponto-cerebellar degeneration [12].

 REM Sleep Behavior Disorder
Normal sleep has 2 distinct states: non–rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (see Sleep: Understanding the Basics for details of various stages of sleep).
During REM sleep, rapid eye movements occur, breathing becomes irregular, blood pressure rises, and there is loss of muscle tone (paralysis).
In a person with REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), the paralysis that normally occurs during REM sleep is incomplete or absent, allowing the person to "act out" his or her dreams.

Background: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a newly described disorder, recognized as a distinct clinical entity following a series of reports in 1986 of adults with RBD.
The presenting complaint is violent dream-enacting behaviors during REM sleep, often causing self-injury or injury to the bed partner.
The dream-enacting behaviors are usually nondirected and may include punching, kicking, leaping, or running from bed while still in REM sleep.
