Desktop fabricator may kick-start home revolution - tech - 09 January 2007 - New Scientist Tech
Rapid prototyping machines are already used by designers, engineers and scientists to create one-off mechanical parts and models.
The standard version of their Freeform fabricator — or "fabber" — is about the size of a microwave oven and can be assembled for around $2400 (£1200).
Adrian Bowyer, who is also working on rapid prototyping machines at Bath University, in the UK, agrees that the technology could have mass appeal once the equipment is cheap enough.

The overarching vision for the Center for Rapid Automated Fabrication Technologies (CRAFT) is to develop the science and engineering needed for rapid automated fabrication of objects of various size up to mega-scale structures such as, boats, industrial objects, public art and whole building structures.
Contour Crafting (CC) is a hybrid fabrication method that combines extrusion for forming object surfaces and filling to build the object core in layered fashion.  As shown in the upper left corner of Figure 1, the extrusion nozzle has an adjacent trowel.
Contour Crafting falls within the class of Rapid Prototyping, or Solid Freeform Fabrication, technologies, but the use of thick layers plus troweling to provide a high quality surface finish and rapid fabrication time affords a scaleup pathway to the rapid fabrication of large building-sized structures that no other technique provides.

Rapid Manufacturing   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Rapid Manufacturing (RM) have been developed to shorten the design and production cycle, and promise to revolutionize many traditional manufacturing procedures.
Although the layer fabrication process itself is typically not as fast as traditional mass production techniques, it eliminates tooling, setup, and assembly processes, can produce parts of superior quality and complexity, and can be ideal for making custom parts based on a customer's special requirements.
However, in layer manufacturing the fabrication process builds the part systematically by adding material instead of cutting it away, and a much wider range of shapes can be achieved, including cavities or intricate geometries that would be difficult or impossible to machine.

Rapid prototyping - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rapid prototyping, is the automatic construction of physical objects using solid freeform fabrication.
The first techniques for rapid prototyping became available in the 1980s and were used to produce models and prototype parts.
In brief, rapid prototyping takes virtual designs (from computer aided design (CAD) or from animation modeling software), transforms them into cross sections, still virtual, and then create each cross section in physical space, one after the next until the model is finished.
