Bay Area Rapid Transit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District is a special governmental agency created by the State of California consisting of Alameda County, Contra Costa County, and San Francisco County.
A rapid transit system in the San Francisco Bay Area was first proposed in 1946 by Bay Area business leaders concerned with increased post-war migration and congestion in the region.
Acting on the recommendations, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District was formed by the state legislature in 1957, comprising the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo.

Rapid transit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A rapid transit, underground, subway, tube, elevated, or metro(politan) system is a railway system, usually in an urban area, with a high capacity and frequency of service, and grade separation from other traffic.
Those who prefer the terms "rapid transit" or "metro" tend to view this as a less important characteristic and include systems that are entirely elevated or at ground level (at grade).
Before any plans were made for transit systems with underground tunnels and stations, several railway operators built tunnels for their trains, usually to reduce the grade of the railway line.

RAPID TRANSIT [rapid transit] transportation system designed to allow passenger travel within or throughout an urban area, usually employing surface, elevated, or underground railway systems or some combination of these.
Rapid transit systems are generally considered to be mass transit systems, capable of moving large numbers of passengers in a single train.
The principal problem to be solved in an urban rapid transit system is that of providing extra capacity to handle the volume of traffic during the morning and evening rush hours without unreasonable delays.

Mass Rapid Transit (Singapore) - tScholars.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The origins of the Mass Rapid Transit are derived from a forecast by city planners in 1967 which stated the need for a rail-based urban transport system by 1992.
The Mass Rapid Transit Corporation—MRTC, later called the SMRT Corporation—was established on 14 October 1983; it took over the roles and responsibilities of the former provisional Mass Rapid Transit Authority.
There were similar expressions of disapproval over the slightly higher fares charged on SBS Transit's North East line, a disparity that SBS Transit justified by citing higher costs of operation and maintenance on a completely underground line, as well as lower patronage.

Boston.com / News / Local / Mass. / T touts rapid bus transit as wave of future
A handful of "bus rapid transit" systems are in place around the country, but they attract the most riders when the vehicles are separated from other traffic in dedicated lanes and tunnels.
The T also wanted to run a bus rapid transit system down Centre Street in Jamaica Plain instead of trolleys for the proposed restoration of the Arborway line; only a ruling from the state environmental secretary prompted the T to drop the bus plan and focus on rail.
Bus rapid transit systems appear to work best when the vehicles run in their own lane, physically separated from traffic, like the system in Curitiba, Brazil, transit planners say.

The BRT system is based on the concept of utilizing dedicated rights-of-way (as in rapid transit) in areas where competition with highway traffic would be greatest, but utilizing existing highways and roadways in less-congested areas wherever possible to reduce costs.
Opponents argue that bus rapid transit services are simply improved bus lines that do not attract the ridership of rail lines, or encourage secondary advantages such as neighborhood revitalization and business development.

Online TDM Encyclopedia - Bus Rapid Transit
Bus Rapid Transit is considered a more affordable alternative to Rail for improving transit service quality and attracting travelers who would otherwise drive on congested urban corridors.
Where transit service quality is currently poor, BRT implementation may require policy and institutional reforms, such as changes in transportation planning and roadway management practices (to give buses priority in traffic); vehicle purchasing; transit regulations and contacting (to maintain a high quality of service); and urban design (to increase development near BRT routes).
Bus Rapid Transit is particularly appropriate on congested urban corridors, although it can be integrated with other transport services, such as longer-distance bus routes and Park and Ride lots, and so can help improve transportation throughout an urban region.

Event Recorders for Rail Rapid Transit Systems
The technical differences between railroad locomotive application and transit application are centered on the fact that the propulsion and control of propulsion, braking and other functions are centralized for locomotives and may be distributed among cars in rail transit operations.
Several transit officials noted that some train and transit operators tend to view event recorders with suspicion, with some concluding that the purpose of an event recorder, especially in an accident, is to determine whether the cause of the accident was human error or equipment failure.
Transit accidental deaths are again a fraction of the railroad total, although they tend to be covered in great depth by the media in the cities where they occur.

Personal Rapid Transit - Cyberspace Dream Keeps Colliding With Reality
A transit concept from the 1960s, envisioning tiny automated electric automobile-like vehicles speeding throughout urban neighborhoods on elevated guideways, Personal Rapid Transit has fallen on its face and seemingly died several times, only to be repeatedly resuscitated by its adherents.
While Personal Rapid Transit is usually presented as a brandnew, emergent concept, it is far from new, and indeed has a record of (troublesome) experience which provides valuable lessons helpful to evaluating critical elements of the PRT concept today.
According to PRT marketers, a major advantage of Personal Rapid Transit is the almost total elimination of passengers' waiting time – cars supposedly would always be queued up in the stations, ready to depart (or else flitting about empty on the guideway system).
