  microsuoni: Rapoon. Robin Storey.
Rapoon, who is now commonly known via his many releases for such labels as Staalplaat and Soleilmoon, debuted in 1992 with 'Dream Circle'.
Rapoon's 1998 release for Staalplaat is a distinct break away from his last works (LP for Soleilmoon, CD for Relapse) in the sense that it is more up-tempo, dealing with rhythms and samples throughout.
Rapoon's music is notable not only for its sheer beauty and mesmerizing textures, but also for the subtle yet distinctive Indian rhythms and atmospheres that color it's palate.

 Interview: Rapoon - 4/4/98
However, I had written the first Rapoon album before departing the project, mostly because the other members of Zoviet France were involved in side projects themselves, and it seemed like the thing to do.
Rapoon was my outlet to write whatever music I enjoyed without having other people controlling my composition.
I met the guys from Relapse briefly in Pittsburgh during the tour I did for Rapoon in 1996.

Mark Teppo (dot) com :: Rapoon - I Am A Foreigner review
His work as Rapoon has always been an endless pattern that shifts and alters itself upon subsequent iterations like the re-arrangement of sand across the broad back of a line of dunes.
Elsewhere, the clear voices are stretched like soft taffy into indistinct organic drones while piano melodies play out in stark relief against these amorphous backgrounds as in "Breakfast in Mesopotamia" where the keyboard plays in a trio with a landscape of ululating voices and distant street pipes.
Rapoon is still looped-based music -- endless times 'round the mulberry bush -- but Storey's impetus with I Am A Foreigner has added a vocal element to the work, a foreground intensity of human speech that is a new emphasis to his work (while voices samples played an integral part of What Do You Suppose?

This Line » Rapoon and the Dream Work of the Ethno-Ambient
I say “abuse” because most of the time when you see dream metaphor in music writing, it’s a rhetorical cul-de-sac; a purely poetic invocation that’s bereft in terms of speaking to the actual nature of dreams themselves.
What also bolsters this comparison is the fact that Rapoon is one person, assembling dream-components in sound through a unique, individualized understanding, rather than the decision-by-committee of a group.
Like dreams themselves, this is music whose function isn’t readily apparent; music that’s meant to be apprehended alone, outside of the social context implied in most sample-based music, away from the waking world.

Electronic music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Others, such as Test Department, Einstürzende Neubauten, took this new sound at face value and created hellish electronic compositions.
Meanwhile, other groups (Robert Rich, :zoviet*france:, rapoon) took these harsh sounds and melded them into evocative soundscapes.
Still others (Front 242, Skinny Puppy) combined this harshness with the earlier, more pop, or rather dance-oriented sounds, forming electronic body music (EBM).

My only other Rapoon, which I'd got about 4 months ago, was his second 'Raising Earthly Spirits' (1993), had been sat around not really listened too (I have been considering an 'old classics' section to &etc), but this seemed like an excellent opportunity to survey Rapoon from either end of his current career.

These two albums were so divorced from my mental image of Rapoon, and also so engrossing, that I am seeking out albums from the inbetween years which had been recommended as 'standard' fare for comparison - more later.

 Rapoon
While on later albums like Shouting at the Ground, Zoviet France had been shifting into rich dronescapes that seemed to have a fog-like weightlessness, Storey wanted to shift towards an exploration of the rhythmic minimalism of Indian, West African, and Bangladeshi indigenous music.
Over nearly two dozen releases as Rapoon, Storey has steadily delved deeper into the mystically charmed arcana of hypnotic rhythms, augmented by extensive use of looped samples, tape manipulation, and ghostly references to the '70s dub techniques of Lee 'Scratch' Perry.
"Alchiva" and "Ochre," from 1993's Raising Earthly Spirits, stand as some of Storey's best work in either Rapoon or Zoviet France, brazenly revealing the dark insistent loops that Storey creates by forcing scratchy vinyl into locked grooves and steadily manipulating it with an arsenal of tricks that he would like to keep secret.
