Rapture (song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Rapture" is track number 8 from the 1980 album Autoamerican by Blondie.
Although "Rapture" wasn't the first successful hip-hop/rap song (the Sugarhill Gang's 1979 hit "Rapper's Delight" reached the top 40 on the US Hot 100 chart), it was the biggest rap hit for a number of years.
For a large segment of the population, it served as an introduction to the burgeoning hip-hop genre.

Who Does That Song - Question of the Week
The song was first taken to the top 10 in Canada and the USA by J Frank Wilson and The Cavaliers in 1964.
The song was a minor hit in 1983, but after a Las Vegas radio station added it to their playlist in 1988, the song was re-released and went all the way to the number one spot in early 1989, long after the group had disbanded.
The song was inspired by the 1959 film “On The Beach”; a movie set in the future when virtually all life on earth has been exterminated by the after effects of a nuclear holocaust.

 Rapture in Song of Solomon
It paints a beautiful picture of the Rapture of the Church when flowers are unfurling their blooms like tiny upside-down umbrellas and birds are singing for the sheer joy of being alive in the spring.
In the Song of Solomon, if you have an ear to hear, you will be able to hear the overtones if you listen carefully.
The green figs enable us to place the Rapture between the end of the latter rain (April 26) and when the early figs ripen, in some years the end of May, in others early June.

In the song, Corcoran tells Josephine that the sailor is beneath her.
Among the theories: The singer playing Capt. Corcoran couldn't handle it; the song was the second of two slow numbers and was thought to be a bit of a drag.

 Halfbakery: Rapture Insurance
I've heard it said that the correct interpretation of "The Rapture" from Revelation is that the non-believers will be the ones raptured, leaving the truly faithful to soldier on against the Kingdom of Evil.
Even though, as people have noted, that nature of the Christian rapture is a contentious theological issue there appears to be enough common ground to allow insurance to be sold to quite a wide range of people.
The rapture is a selective experience, for which the rules for not being involved is quite clear even taking into account ecumenical differences.

 Splendid E-zine reviews: The Rapture
The musical stream of consciousness that is The Rapture seems to flow from the wellspring of acts like PIL and Television -- bands that saw the burned out cavity left by first-wave punk bands and filled it with something pop-like.
Truth-in-advertising enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that "The Pop Song" is, in fact, the poppiest (as in catchiest) song on the album.
Although the vocals sound like a cat with its tail in a blender, "The Pop Song" really is, at its core, shiny, happy pop, suitable for filling the smoking craters left by the current wave of burnt-out punk bands.

The first song on the album starts out with a weird noise that I would guess is a heavily processed Hammond in the same vein as the 70's intros to Lazy.
The song itself is a heavy, dark song with a slight oriental, Perfect Strangers-type feel to some of the riffs.
As a song, this is a fairly uninteresting song that feels like one of those songs you often find in the middle of an album.

‘Rapture’ opens with ‘Sweet Love’, a signature song of hers, and Anita shows the versatility of her voice, from the low whispery notes (a lead Toni Braxton later followed) before taking the listener to a vocal climax by using her higher register which posses both power and beauty.
When one gets weary of listening to run of the mill pop/randb songs sung by indifferent singers or those only capable of vocal histrionics, it is all too easy to forget what a great singer can do with a very ordinary song.
Rapture is an extraordinary album not because of the compositions, but because of the smoky, flexible and expressive voice of Anita Baker.

The Rapture: Echoes - Playing God - Stylus Magazine
As part of the burgeoning dance-punk scene, with ties to hip priests of the genre The DFA, all eyes were on The Rapture to deliver the genre’s equivalent to Nevermind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, or at least a solid LP to announce that discopunk had arrived.
The song that first put The Rapture onto the map, the precursor to “House of Jealous Lovers,” and still one of their finest moments.
But it’s such a good song that even the people that tend to complain about the album’s inconsistencies and flaws tend to leave “Infatuation” out of the discussion, leading me to believe that it’s OK to still be putting that song on the mix.

You have to respect Siouxsie Sioux's role as an influence-without her, there wouldn't be nearly as much fl nail polish at Lollapalooza-but artistically, she's been treading water since the mid '80s.
There are also the brooding slow songs that impress, like Forever and Sick Child, while The Lonely One is another beautiful melodic ballad with a gripping hook, rich instrumentation and spooky whispered male backing vocals.
When I realized that the enchanting songs "Forever" and "The Rapture" were on the same Siouxsie album, I had to own it.
