William Wyatt-Gill, a missionary in the 1800s, wrote about the l’oi when he was in Rarotonga, and described a hunting method to catch flocks of l’oi that were feeding on coral trees (Ngate) when they were in bloom.
The nectar of the bright red flower was apparently one of the bird’s favourite tipples, and when it flew from the mainland to the coastal trees in the early morning or evening, it was captured using a coconut fibre noose placed near the flowers.
In 1999, during an environmental workshop for the countries of Polynesia held in Rarotonga, it was decided that a comprehensive survey of the l’oi bird was a priority project.

There are a few wrecks around Rarotonga dating from the 1950's to explore but these have been badly damaged by recent cyclones.
The best drop-off's on Rarotonga are on the south coast whilst the north coast has a more gentle descent and therefore better corals.
