Raschig process - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Raschig process is a chemical process for producing hydroxylamine (used for making caprolactam for nylon manufacture).
The process converts ammonium carbonate to ammonium nitrite, and this is converted to hydroxylamine disulfonate and thence to hydroxylamine sulfate.
Hydrazine is produced in the Olin Raschig process.

An industrial process is a procedure that alters materials or substances (grinding, welding, heat treatment, etc).
Some processes make the production of a rare material vastly cheaper, thus changing it into a commodity; i.e.
the process makes it economically feasible for society to use the material on a large scale.

The process according to claim 1, wherein the reactor used in the stage (d) is a distillation column.
The Bayer process is an alternative form of the Raschig process which consists in shifting a chemical equilibrium by trapping, using acetone, the hydrazine formed in the azine form (CH.sub.3).sub.2 C.dbd.N--N.dbd.C--(CH.sub.3).sub.2.
The process with hydrogen peroxide consists in oxidizing a mixture of ammonia and a ketone with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a means for activating the hydrogen peroxide in order to directly form the azine, which it is sufficient subsequently to hydrolyse to hydrazine hydrate.

Hydrazine is produced in the Olin Raschig process from sodium hypochlorite and ammonia, a process developed in 1907.
Acetone and ammonia first react to give the imine followed by oxidation with hydrogen peroxide to the oxaziridine, a three-membered ring containing carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, followed by ammonolysis to the hydrazone, a process that couples two nitrogen atoms.
Hydrazine is used in many processes including: production of spandex fibers, as a polymerization catalyst, a blowing agent, in fuel cells, solder, fluxes, and photographic developers, as a chain extender in urethane polymerizations, and heat stabilizers.

Five processes evaluated in PEP Report No. 22 (the toluene process, the Raschig process, the sulfonation process, the chlorination process, and the cyclohexane process) are briefly reviewed with respect to new developments.
The cost features of these processes are revised as a result of introducing some minor modifications of the processes, using improved estimation techniques, and adjusting to the present-day cost index.

This program included, for example, the installation of various new plants for producig caprolactam feedstock and side products such as cyclohexanone, hydroxylammonium sulphate, as well as the extension and modernization of the phenol plant.
After changing the Raschig process previously used to produce hydroxylammonium sulphate over to selective NO hydrogenation, the company encountered unexpected problems.
Owing to the change in hydroxylammonium sulphate production - this in the inorganic feedstock for caprolactam synthesis - a diluted nitric acid is produced which results in substantial amounts of dissolved NO and NO gases.
