		Takahashi and Nakata were later recruited to produce another sequel, Ring 2, which replaced Rasen as the sequel to Ring, having taken a different and original storyline from Suzuki's book.
		Hence Rasen became forgotten both in terms of canon and marketing.
		Reasons for the failure are generally regarded as being confusion of movie-goers due to the concurrent release of the two films and negative word of mouth.

		I'm not actually sure what went through the minds of Japanese movie executives when they not only chose to film a sequel to Ringu, but then released it in the same year (and not too far off from when the first film premiered).
		Ryuji and his ex-wife, a reporter by the name of Reiko Asakawa, thought they had solved the curse, only to end up with both of them dead, one by the curse, the other in a wreck when her child fell victim to the curse.
		Because of this, Rasen proves to be less of a horror film and more of a paranormal drama with some thriller moments.

		RASEN (which translates as "Spiral") is the first sequel to the Japanese horror hit RINGU.
		The odd thing about RASEN is that it attempts to be faithful to Suzuki's book while to a large extent ignoring the liberties taken with the story by the RINGU movie.
