 The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
The RSS was established in 1925 as a kind of educational body whose objective was to train a group of Hindu men who would work together to unite the Hindu community, so that India could once again become an independent country.
In its inception, the RSS had two basic aims: (1.) to unite and train Hindus to face the enemy, any alien party that was attempting to subjugate Hinduism; and (2.) to radicalize the Hindus to hasten the British withdrawal from India.
The RSS was beginning to attract, and continues to attract, low income Hindus and small shopkeepers, who were concerned with their opportunities in a government that favoured the high class or minorities.

As leaders in BJP and RSS slug it out among themselves, this fight is going to turn more vicious and in the public eye resulting in the Sangh losing its moral dominance over the rank and file of the Parivar.

At the Agra conclave of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the biggest ever meeting of RSS activists, there was the usual veiled criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in government, but the main focus was on the need to "Indianise" Muslims and Christians.
Although the RSS could assert its leadership of the Parivar, it felt that in the absence of an agency that could ensure the implementation of the "corrective" plans, the Vajpayee government would continue to tread "the path of drift".
The shivir was touted as the biggest meet of RSS activi sts ever, and its ostensible objectives were to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the organisation and to focus "the nation's attention on the growing threats to national security".

 Hinduism Today | Nov 1999
The RSS was at the time of India's independence already one of the largest organizations in the country, and today with some four million members among its "family," it is decidedly the largest.
What's in a word: The basic RSS concept is simple: India consists of hundreds of millions of Hindus; therefore, its national identity should be Hindu, just as the national identities of nations with a large majority of Christian or Muslim citizens are forthrightly Christian or Muslim.
The political fix: The RSS philosophy is to build a Hindu nation person by person and therefore it has a built-in aversion to politics, considering it a rather messy business involving too many compromises and not really making fundamental changes in the nation.
