John Urpeth Rastrick was born in Morpeth, Northumberland on 26th January, 1780, son of John and Mary (nee Urpeth) Rastrick.
Rastrick's father was an engineer and his son was apprenticed to him in 1795.
As Foster, Rastrick and Co, Rastrick was involved with the construction of a colliery railway, this time steam-hauled, at Shutt End, north of Stourbridge.

Rastrick was born in Morpeth, Northumberland, to John Rastrick and Mary (Urpeth).
Rastrick was one of three judges at the Rainhill Trials of 1829 which conclusively proved the benefits of Stevenson's 'Rocket' locomotive.
Rastrick's diaries and notebook of the trial are valuable records of the performance of locomotives of that era.

When Rastrick’s apprenticeship ended, he enrolled as a student of the Royal Academy of Arts before leaving England for four years to study and sketch in Europe, Asia Minor, and Egypt.
Rastrick was a vice-president of the Association of Architects, Civil Engineers and Provincial Land Surveyors of the Province of Canada in 1860—61 and of its fleeting successor in 1862, the Association of Surveyors, Civil Engineers and Architects.

 Frederick James Rastrick and the Changing Face of Hamilton in the 1850s - Raise the Hammer
Frederick Rastrick was born in August, 1819, in the Staffordshire town of West Bromwich, the third son of John Urpeth Rastrick and his wife, Sarah Jervis.
Rastrick was so eminent that he was invited by the directors of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway to set the conditions and then judge the famous Rainham Trials of 1829 where Robert Stephenson's Rocket demonstrated clearly the advantages of his locomotive design.
Frederick James Rastrick died on 12 September 1897, and was buried in the Christ Church section of the Hamilton Cemetery.

The names Raistrick and Rastrick which are identical in origin, derive from the hilltop village of Rastrick.
Although a Thomas de Rastricke was constable in1397, there is evidence to show that the family owned land in Northowram, and in the 1379 Poll Tax, Roger de Rastrig of Northowram was the only person with this surname taxed in the Bradford and Halifax areas.
The documents relating to the Calverley family contain numerous references to the Rastricks right through the next 150 years and it is noticeable that the same christian names John and Henry predominate.

RASTRICK, in the parish of Halifax, Morley-division of Agbrigg and Morley, liberty of Wakefield, 4 miles from Halifax, 5 from Huddersfield.
Here was a Chapel, as early as 1411, which was taken down and handsomely re built, about six and thirty years ago.
By an inquest, taken in 1284, it appears that the village of Rastrick was rated at thirteen shillings, and contained only six freemen; the rest were, according to that inquest, "Nativi tenentes villains, or bondsmen:" such as were at the arbitrary pleasure of the Lord, both in their persons, children, and goods.

The town of Rastrick certainly dates back to the Domesday Book, and some say back to the Roman settlement when it was a "Rest Ridge' for the legions moving north to Hadrian's Wall to defend against the Scots.
J Horsfall Turner, The History of Brighouse, Rastrick and Hipperholme mentions a Thomas de Rastryk who was appointed constable at Brighouse court, and several court cases between 1307 and 1329 involving various de Rastricks.
The branch retaining the surname Rastrick eventually migrated to Calverley in Airedale, and the present localised distribution of the two variants suggests that this family name has a single origin, for it is Bradford and Shipley which is the true home of the surname now.

Administrative/Biographical history: John Urpeth Rastrick was born at Morpeth in Northumberland on 26 January 1780, the son of John Rastrick, an engineer to whom he became articled in 1795.
During this time, Rastrick assisted in the construction of the locomotive 'Catch me who Can' for Richard Trevithick in 1808, and in 1814, he took out a patent for a steam engine and soon started experimenting with steam traction on railways.
Rastrick became an active supporter of railway proposals put before Parliament, an adviser to railway companies, and a designer and builder of locomotives - the 'Agenoria' and 'Stourbridge Lion' for example.

In 1819, John Rastrick joined the firm and designed the "New Foundry" which was completed in 1820 and includes a magnificent iron roof with cast iron tie-bars and wrought iron rafters.
The works became well-known for the quality of its cast and rolled iron and supplied a large proportion of the fish-bellied rail for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.
Rastrick's locomotives Agenoria and Stourbridge Lion were built here in 1828.
