Throughout my years on Kwajalein, while we surfed our favorite spots, I always imagined the northeast atolls, the Ratak (Sunrise) chain, as having more consistent and epic waves – a little wave is steeper in the other atoll syndrome.
Kwajalein on the other hand is located in the Ralik (Sunset) chain of the Marshall Islands tucked southwest of the Ratak chain.
I surmised that these northeast atolls were responsible for blocking many swells from reaching Kwaj.
