Rats Made Remoted-Controlled With Brain Implants
"Ratbot", as the creature has been named, could one day be used to rescue earthquake victims buried under rubble, seek out land mines or even, with the help of miniature video cameras, spy inside secret installations.
Human operators were able to steer the Ratbots through the obstacle course as if they were guiding intelligent robots, said Sanjiv Talwar, a researcher at the State University of New York, who helped to run the study, published in the journal Nature.
If this research continues to advance, the age of Ratbot could be a prelude to the day when paralysed humans could operate artificial limbs, just like the half-human cyborgs of science fiction.

Using electrodes in a brain and a remote control, researchers have been able to remotely control the movements of a rat.
This offers the possibility to create "ratbot" that could go in dangerous places.
Conversely, the activity of a brain can be detected by electrodes, raising the possibility of "brain-computer interface".

The May 2nd issue of Nature includes a report by investigators, from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center (Brooklyn) and Drexel University, who implanted microelectrodes into the brains of 5 live rats and were subsequently able to control the movement of the rats and direct them through complex mazes.
The ethics of such "mind control" have yet to be fully addressed, but are already under considerable discussion.
