Ratdog, the rock, blues, jazz, jam band and whatnot outfit headed by the former Dead guitarist and his one-time Mill Valley neighbor, bassist Rob Wasserman, has been kicking around since 1995.
Ratdog is more of a real working band than Dead spinoff bands the Other Ones and Phil Lesh and Friends, according to Weir.

That Hampton Beach tour was the first for Weir's newly-formed band, Ratdog, and the last time the band played the venue.
At that time, Ratdog's sound man was from the Grateful Dead's sound company and Wasserman figured that if anybody knew what was happening, he would, so Wasserman immediately went in search of the guy.

Ratdog's ragged performance promoted these kind of musings, as it was very much a "what-a-long-strange-trip-it's-been" kind of thing.
But then very soon it was all over, again leaving many wondering why Ratdog tries to cram so many musical styles into a show without the musical mind-reading abilities that made the Dead pull it off more often than not.
Ratdog should improve fast or rethink their name -- Dog's Breakfast is more like it.

Because Ratdog is a band that has been together for many years now, it is no surprise that their debut CD is as good as it is. I can’t imagine any deadhead not loving this disc.
The core of Ratdog remains Bob on lead vocals and rhythm guitar.
The best compliment I can give it is that when I see Ratdog in Hartford on November 11th, I’ll be more excited about hearing these new songs than anything out of the Grateful Dead repertoire.

So the day after Ratdog's tour ended, the group went in for a week of sessions at Coast Recorders in San Francisco, and that yielded about half the basics used on the record; the other half came from the original sessions at Weir's studio, which he affectionately calls "The Doghouse" these days.
Also guesting on the album are current Ratdog sax player Kenny Brooks, former Ratdog member Matthew Kelly and ex-Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, who still occasionally tours with Weir in the Deadish group, The Other Ones.
How that happened, by the way, is when I first started playing with Ratdog, which was before Jerry died; it was a vacation for me from the Grateful Dead and that whole body of material.

RatDog must regretfully announce the postponement of the Bob Weir and RatDog tour scheduled to begin tomorrow, October 7th, in Ridgefield, Connecticut.
Since January, Bob Weir has worked continuously on music dates for RatDog and The Dead, promotional work for his career retrospective album, and a number of nonprofit appearances.
That and his desire to give his fans only the best possible performance outweighed the difficulties of rescheduling the tour.
