Topic: Rated X (film)

X-rated - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When the MPAA film rating system was instituted in 1968 in the U.S., the X-rating was given to a film by the MPAA if submitted to them or, due to its non-trademarked status, it could be self-applied to a film by a distributor who knew beforehand that their film contained content unsuitable for minors.
The film was released with the tagline "Rated X by an All White Jury" because of this fact.
Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat, released in 1972, was the first animated film to receive an X rating in the United States, promoted with the tagline "He's X Rated and Animated!" The material in the film itself wasn't pornographic, and the film was later released with an "Unrated" mark on VHS and DVD.

Rated X (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rated X is a 2000 film starring Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez, who also directs.
The movie is based on the real lives of the Mitchell brothers, Jim and Artie Mitchell, who were successful in the pornography and strip club business in San Francisco, California in the 1960s and 1970s.
Despite the film's name, it actually was rated R by the MPAA.

 X-rated
At one time, it was used as a rating by the MPAA; for instance, the film Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was originally rated X by the MPAA and has since been released on video in an unrated version.
All the ratings used by the MPAA, which administers the MPAA film rating system, are trademarked by them.
"X" rated movies are not permitted to be sold in most States, but possession of such movies is legal and they are sold in the Australian Capital Territory; the constitution forbids retraint in goods and trade between the States, and so they are available in all States by mail-order.

Rated X is a dramatization, but it eschews the opportunity to do anything new with the genre, instead retreading the druggy, down-in-flames trajectory that typically plagues smut-biz protagonists in all of these films.
Yet the film is accurate in its assertion that the siblings had a knack for gussying up, and profiting from, the industry's seamier novelties and trends.
The worst thing about Rated X -- besides the fact that the story favors the killer -- is that it sidesteps both imagination and ambition in pursuit of the cheap-thrill trinity of drugs, sex, and violence.

Rated X starts with a scene in which porno baron Jim Mitchell (Emilio Estevez in a bald wig, looking like Frederick March in Inherit the Wind) sits and listens to his brother Artie (Estevez's real brother, Charlie Sheen) scream death threats over the answering machine.
Although Rated X implies that Jim Mitchell was a misunderstood artist, we never really get to see enough of their work to judge that.
Rated X is a Showtime release that purports to be the story of porn legends The Mitchell Bros. Scoopy has pretty much outlined the plot and covered the exposure in his review.

For instance, the film Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was originally rated X by the MPAA and has since been released on video in an unrated version.
However, the "X" rating was never trademarked by the MPAA (largely so that a producer of a film which would justifiably be considered X-rated could apply the rating by oneself without having to submit the film to the MPAA), whereas the NC-17 rating has been trademarked by the MPAA.
While some films were hard-core and left nothing to the imagination, most enjoyed the art of innuendo, which is to say, you couldn't tell whether the participants who were getting it on were faking it--or doing it for real.

Adapted from David McCumber's tome X Rated: The Mitchell Brothers, a True Story of Sex, Money and Death, the obvious lure for this telepic is the inspired casting of real-life bros Estevez and Charlie Sheen as these bad boys of skinema.

Still, "Rated X" was good enough to be shown at the Sundance Film Festival, and Showtime has a long history of airing movies that are challenging and controversial.

- The film was rated X upon its original release in 1969, but the unrestricted use of that rating by pornographic filmmakers caused the rating to quickly become associated with hardcore films.
Because of the stigma that developed around the X rating in the ratings system's early years (many theaters refused to run X films, and many newspapers would not run ads for them), the film was given a new R rating in 1971, without having anything changed or removed.
The film's rating had been changed to R by the time of the film's television premiere.
