Rathcoole was to become the largest housing estate in Northern Ireland, and was incorporated as part of Newtownabbey when the latter received urban status in April 1968.
The situation continued to deteriorate as regards protection of Catholic families living in Rathcoole, so that in February 1972 an anti-intimidation committee comprising both religious groups was set up to combat the threats and violence and help the victims of intimidation.
The deterioration of the situation in Rathcoole in Mid 1972 was predicted by certain community leaders, and was reported to the Police and the Army.

The manager of the Slade Valley equestrian club outside Rathcoole in County Dublin has appeared in court charged with possession of drugs with intent to supply.
Detectives investigating one of the country's biggest drug trafficking gangs found 485 kilos of cannabis and a quantity of arms and ammunition buried at the club.
Ray Molloy, 30, was charged with possession of cannabis at the Poitín Stil in Rathcoole, County Dublin on 16 August.

A 21-year-old Dublin man has been before Dublin District Court charged with six counts of possession and supply of drugs.
The charges arise from the seizure of £300,000 worth of ecstasy tablets and cannabis in Rathcoole last Thursday.
Barry Meates from Clondalkin was remanded in custody to appear before Kilmainham District court next Friday.
