  Power Line: Rathergate: The cover-up
The Rathergate report recounts the cover-up phase of the Rathergate scandal at pages 153-210.
One of the eerie echoes of Watergate in the Rathergate affair is the four terminations -- of CBS News Senior Vice President Betsy West; 60 Minutes Executive Producer Josh Howard; Howard's deputy, Mary Murphy; and 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes -- with which CBS has now sought to end the scandal.

The "Rathergate" Incident: Remembering Why Separation of Press and State Is Vital - TechKnowledge Newsletter
The controversy—now referred to as “Rathergate” by many—has led some Republicans in Congress to suggest that hearings are needed into this matter.
While no journalist in America will go to jail or lose the right to report because of the Rathergate incident, the idea of Congress investigating newsgathering scandals is troubling because it could have a subtle but real chilling effect on reporting.
In the Rathergate case, even if some members of Congress say they just want to “get to the bottom” of the incident, we must not allow the wall between press and state to be breached.

John Kerry and the liberals of the Democrat party cater to and, with increasingly rare exceptions, represent the enemy within and, because they don’t understand the source of America’s virtue, fail to recognize the nature of the enemy without and that it cannot be appeased, but must be destroyed.
It’s clear that the method employed here is to begin with a story you want to tell, produce resources to support that story (the more sympathetic the better), then rely on your status as a “journalist” when the integrity of your sources is questioned.
Continuing to act in their self-appointed role as DNC aplogists, major media outlets are highlighting isolated bits of the years of President Bush’s service in the Air National Guard in order to deliberately support the assertion by the Kerry campaign that Bush did not fulfill his service obligation.

It was very frustrating to have followed Rathergate from the beginning, watch bloggers develop the story, then read the report and see page after page of political bias, only to have the Panel wimp out in the end.
The action was prompted by the report of an independent panel that concluded that CBS News failed to follow basic journalistic principles in the preparation and reporting of the piece.
There are many great and high-minded ideas and discussions we should be engaged in, but this moment in history, the eve of a presidential election, is very important.

Powerline, which did a phenomenal job unraveling the Rathergate mess, fell for (and perpetrated) this falsehood.
Powerline's John Hinderaker claimed, "there is no reason whatsoever to believe that the memo originated with the Republicans." He added, "it seems extremely likely that it was produced by Democrats as a political dirty trick."
The same partisan zeal that drove CBS to Rathergate drove bloggers to overreach on this story.

It was the post that launched 10,000 stories -- and a media firestorm that toppled longtime network anchor Dan Rather and several of his CBS News colleagues.
The flap that came to be known as "Rathergate" began on September 8, 2004, with a comment to a thread in a Web-based conservative discussion forum, Free Republic.
I think it's interesting that Rathergate has become known as the big story that first put weblogs on the news-media map.

The CBS mess variously known as "Forgerygate" or "Rathergate" is by any other name a seminal moment in the blogosphere that holds promise not only for revolutionizing journalism, but also perhaps for problem-solving on a global scale.
Still in relative infancy, the blogosphere - that new galaxy within the journalism universe wherein citizen journalists known as bloggers (short for keepers of Web logs) chat among themselves through mutual links and commentary - has defined itself in large part as a vehicle for challenging the mainstream media (MSM).
Some were trolls, yes, but there are at least a couple thousand Americans who will now get their news from this comprehensive, brilliant site and can forward articles to friends and family.....

Their playbook in this regard feeds and follows a well-established White House approach: When confronted by unwelcome truths, avoid them, deny them or tarnish the critic.
Fox News branded this dust-up a scandal, a "Rathergate," using a familiar "change-the-subject" tactic to deflect attention away from persuasive charges that President Bush has not told the truth about his military "service." Allegations about a media misdemeanor were quickly blown up into a felony demanding Rather's career termination with prejudice.

An examination of the timeline of publicly-reported events leading up to the Rathergate scandal raises some interesting questions about possible as-yet unrevealed collusion among Bill Burkett, members of the national press corps, and the Kerry campaign.
Someone other than CBS and Burkett appears to have known about the phony documents, and spread the word quietly, in preparation for a massive coordinated campaign to discredit President Bush.

Good citizen journalism often relies on some sort of partisanship as a motivator to continue researching a story.
(The same thing happened with the Rathergate scandal.) Strangely enough, some of the best citizen journalism is born from a lack of objectivity.
A well-oiled democratic process requires open access to information -- even for people with an axe to grind, whether they are journalists, political activists, or citizens.
