 Notes on My RPI Calculations
A team's RPI is a sum of three values: 25% of the team's winning percentage, 50% of its opponents' average winning percentage (strength of schedule), and 25% of its opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (opponents' strength of schedule).
For example, if a team is 2-0, and has played opponents who are 2-3 and 2-1, then the opponents' records are adjusted to 2-2 and 2-0 in order to calculate their winning percentages.
A similar adjustment used to be made to remove each team's wins and losses from its opponents' opponents' records before calculating its opponents' opponents' winning percentage.

 NCAA Women's Basketball RPI
The Ratings Percentage Index, or RPI, is a formula used by the NCAA to help determine which teams go to post-season tournaments and how they are seeded.
To be precise, it rates teams according to where, on average, their margins of victory fall on a normal distribution of the year's NCAA women's basketball results.
To predict the result of a game, take the rating of the home team, add the mean home advantage, and subtract the rating of the visiting team.

 Rating the Ratings Systems
Ratings systems are used for the purpose evaluating teams objectively, and have taken quite a hold in the college sports arena, from the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) method for selecting college football bowl berths, to the RPI (ratings percentage index) system used to some degree in NCAA tournament selection in college basketball.
Ratings systems are motivated by the need to factor in schedule strength in cases where the size of the league is large and the quality of teams' schedules vary considerably; cases where the straight win-loss record is not informative enough.
This is a shame, because with all the effort going into ratings systems, we could have learned a lot more about what is important for a quality ratings system, and, equally importantly, how well they actually perform.

For all the consternation generated by the Ratings Percentage Index, its enemies should remember there are more ominous ways to rearrange the letters that form its handy acronym.
It is calculated by combining three elements: the team's winning percentage (25 percent of the total), its opponents' winning percentage (50 percent) and the winning percentage of the opponents' opponents (25 per cent).
But even a ratings system that factors in game sites is going to be influenced by a team that wins 10 or 11 nonconference home games.

However, winning an at-large berth may be difficult since the Ratings Percentage Index, or RPI, does not look too kind on the 49ers.

Since 1993-94 the lowest rated RPI team ever to make the field of 64 was New Mexico with a 75 last year.
