How Insects Use Sex to Protect Their Mates From Predators / Some moths transmit chemicals that spiders find positively ...
Of all the wedding gifts that male animals can offer their brides, the lovely rattlebox moth must surely be the most generous: In the act of copulating, he gives his female partner lifelong protection against being devoured by voracious spiders.
Rattlebox moth copulation is a feat of endurance, he noted, for once the moths start to mate, they remain coupled together for as long as nine hours at a time.
Those chemicals, it seems, are totally repulsive to at least two species of spiders -- orb weavers and wolf spiders -- and the male caterpillars retain the plant's alkaloids in their bodies through the pupal stage of their lives and even after they emerge from their cocoons as winged moths.

Rattlebox was sentenced with “conspiring to become a cultist” and duly locked inside his windowless stateroom.
Rattlebox, he realized, was his only confidant aboard the ship and his imprisonment put Grand into a state of befuddlement; he began misplacing medicines, papers, plaster casts, over turning inkbottles and ignoring these puddles as they crept across his writing, reclaiming ideas back to the void from which they sprang.
Rattlebox’s condition had deteriorated; the odor of rotting flesh had settled like mildew between the cracks of his stateroom and the doctor could only stand it by holding a camphorated handkerchief to his face.

The sperm of the male rattlebox moth provides its mate with a sexually transmitted chemical "life insurance" that safeguards her from predators, scientists have found.

The rattlebox - also called the ornate - moth, which is native to central Florida, alerts predators to its inedible nature through its elaborate flamingo pink, fl and white colour scheme.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids from plants are extruded as a froth when the rattlebox moth is disturbed.
The rattlebox moth, also known as the ornate moth for its elaborate pink-white-fl color scheme, dines exclusively on leaves of the rattlebox plant, Crotalaria mucronata, (so named because beans in the dried pods make good rattles) and a related legume, C.
After dissecting moths that have died naturally, the biologists say the doughnut-like rings accumulate in the sperm pouch and resemble a miniature coiled spring -- a kind of keepsake necklace from all the males she has known.

Male moth's sperm package aids females
An enduring nuptial gift is included in every sperm package from a male rattlebox moth (Utetheisa ornatrix) to his freshly mated female: a potent, plant-derived chemical that protects her for life against predatory spiders, biologists at Cornell have discovered.
The first (but almost certainly not the only) example of a sexually transmitted chemical defense to benefit a female animal is reported in the May 11 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by Cornell biologists Andrés González, Carmen Rossini, Maria Eisner and Thomas Eisner.
During courtship, Eisner added, the female rattlebox moth has a way of sensing which suitor offers the best chemical defense, and she chooses accordingly.

But he eventually surmised the signal was chemical in nature when he noticed that even a bell jar emptied of female moths attracted males.
Rattlebox moths get their name from the male's preference for the leaves of the poisonous rattlebox plant during his larval stage, a predilection that protects him from spiders and other predators.
During rattlebox moth courtship, the female broadcasts her pheromone first - Eisner's lab calls it "The Chanel." When a male locates her, he counters with a small sample of his rattlebox poison.

Wiregrass (Aristida stricta), rattlebox (Crotalaria rotundifolia), and butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) all exhibited negative aboveground (-26%, -53%, and -65%, respectively) and belowground (-36%, -43%, and -52%, respectively) biomass responses to elevated CO2; C content responses again followed patterns similar to biomass.
Elevated CO2 resulted in alterations in community structure; 88% of total biomass in CO2-enriched plots was allocated to longleaf pine with only 8% allocated to wiregrass, rattlebox, and butterfly weed.
Therefore, while longleaf pine may perform well in a high CO2 world, other members of this community may not be able to compete as well as atmospheric CO2 concentration continues to rise.
