The most well-known species are the Black Rat Rattus rattus, and the Brown Rat Rattus norvegicus.
These are of the species Rattus norvegicus, which originated in the grasslands of China and spread to Europe and eventually, in 1775, to the New World.
The Black Plague is traditionally believed to have been caused by the micro-organism Yersinia pestis, carried by the rat flea Xenopsilia cheopis which preyed on Rattus rattus living in European cities of the day; it is notable that these rats were also victims themselves.

Rattus Norvegicus was unleashed in 1977, in the midst of the punk phenomena sweeping the British nations, and it was sadly often overlooked in favour of the work of the Sex Pistols and such.
The song, as with the majority of early Stranglers material, is aggressive in tone, and as with almost all songs it's built around the pounding bass of JJ Burnel, with Cornwell's guitar taking on the role the bass does in most songs.
Rattus Norvegicus is a wonderful album, and I believe all fans of the band, as well as fans of the 70s punk era should own a copy.

In the days when sailors slept in open hammocks, ship rats were notorious for creeping up on them in the night and attempting to unscrew their toenails (the smell of human feet sends their grooming behaviour into overdrive).

The songs on Rattus are suprisingly poppy, they have aged well.
What marked them out was the brilliance with which they harnessed this to strongly melodic songs, technically innovative playing (check out the keyboards on Down in the Sewer), and a gift for striking phrases delivered in Hugh Cornwell's sneering drawl (need anyone ask why they used the word 'charabanc' in Peaches?).
In Rattus Norvegicus, they achieved the perfect synthesis of violent, chauvinistic politically-incorrect ugliness with melody and musicianship, leaving listeners captivated but uncomfortable for decades to come.
