It is celebrated annually on the last Monday of May, in honour of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna (1888-1958), the national father of modern Fiji, whose death anniversary falls on 30 May.
Ratu Sukuna Day in 2000 was marred by the insurrection instigated by George Speight on 19 May 2000, which led to the dismissal of the elected government on 27 May.
On Ratu Sukuna Day, Fijian citizens woke up to hear of the military takeover the night before, in the wake of the resignation, possibly forced, of the President, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.

The idea of asking landowners to surrender forever the control of their land and to entrust its administration, in the national as well as the owners’ interest, to a central body – even of the highest standing, as was proposed – was so novel and it took some understanding and explanation before being accepted.

Ratu Sukuna would not be supporting the imposition of a sugar industry restructure plan that is based purely on the Fiji Sugar Corporation's management views instead of one based on dialogue and reconciliation between landowners and tenants.
Had Ratu Sukuna lived today he would not be trying to defend his brainchild, the FAB or the NLTB bureaucracy and the provincial administration.
