Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, who died on Sunday aged 83, became President of Fiji in 1994 after earlier serving as a district officer and then the first Prime Minister of the South Seas dominion.
Mara cut a formidable figure at Commonwealth prime ministers' conferences, not least because he was 6 ft 6 in tall and wore the sulu (knee-length skirt); also, his statesmanlike qualities were immediately apparent.
Mara received honorary doctorates from Guam, Delhi and Otago Universities, and was also Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific at Suva, a new institution with which he was not enamoured.

 Ratu Sir George Cakobau Biography
A great-grandson of Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau, the King of Bau who had unified all the tribes of Fiji under his reign in the mid-1800s and subsequently ceded the islands to the United Kingdom in 1874, Ratu Cakobau was Fiji’s highest-ranking traditional chief.
Ratu Cakobau, was appointed Governor General in 1972, becoming the first indigenous Fijian to serve as the representative of Queen Elizabeth.
Ratu Cakobau was awarded this honour as a sign of the special relationship between Fiji and the British Monarchy, following the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in 1982.

Born in the eastern Lau islands, the son of the head of the Vuanirewa clan and paramount chief of the Lau archipelago, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba, Mara was inculcated from the cradle with the autocratic characteristics that were a feature of the Fijian ruling class.
Mara's first major achievement as the newly independent nation's premier was perhaps his greatest: in 1971 he played a critical role in corralling the often squabbling regional nations into the South Pacific Forum.
