Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Ratu Sir Kamisese was the last of a group of powerful, mostly hereditary Pacific Island chiefs who led their countries to independence from British, Australian, New Zealand and American colonial rule from the mid-1960's.
Ratu Sir Kamisese is survived by his wife, Ro Lala Mara, a paramount chief who outranked him in the Fijian aristocratic hierarchy, three daughters and two sons.
Ratu Mara's character was a mixture of the forthright and the diplomatic, the inflexible and the dexterous, the imperious and the tolerant.

 Babasiga: Congratulations Tui Macuata
Ratu Aisea Katonivere, a self-described “conservation convert,” is the paramount chief of the province of Macuata on Fiji’s second largest island of Vanua Levu.
Ratu Aisea tells us that his “conversion” came about three years ago, when he heard that the Great Sea Reef, covering an area of 78,242 square miles, is the third largest barrier reef in the world.
Ratu Aisea, his four allies and their people developed a management plan for the MPA and decided to use an old war cry, Siga Damu a Vanua, to garner support for their conservation network.

PM's Message for Ratu Sukuna Day borders on hypocrisy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Had Ratu Sukuna lived as Prime Minister of Fiji today, he would not be promoting (the type of policies of the SDL on land which are surely leading to unproductiveness and increased poverty of the tenants and the landowners and the impending collapse of the sugar industry.
Ratu Sukuna would not be supporting the imposition of a sugar industry restructure plan that is based purely on the Fiji Sugar Corporation's management views instead of one based on dialogue and reconciliation between landowners and tenants.
Had Ratu Sukuna lived today he would not be trying to defend his brainchild, the FAB or the NLTB bureaucracy and the provincial administration.

Obituary: Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara - 20 Apr 2004 - Democracy
Often described as the father of modern Fiji, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, Fiji's Prime Minister for more than 20 years, ultimately failed in his attempt to build a bridge from the ancient traditions of Fijian leadership to a modern multiracial democracy.
The years of stability, nationhood and growth achieved under Ratu Mara were neither accidental nor just an evolutionary phase in the growth of the nation, says Mahendra Chaudhry, Fiji's first Indian Prime Minister, who was deposed and held hostage in the 2000 coup that also saw the end of Ratu Mara's 30-year official career.
But it was Ratu Mara's innate leadership which saw him guide not only his young country, but also steer the other newly independent states in forming their own organisation, now known as the Pacific Islands Forum.

Qarase said Ratu Sukuna described the decision of the Fijians to allow the NLTB to take over the administration of their land as unmatched acts of goodwill and cooperation as nothing like this had ever happened before in any country.
He said Ratu Sukuna would be pleased with the progress the NLTB is going through as it caters for the demands of a modern economy.
Qarase also said that the Ratu Sukuna was also a man of vision as he understood that as democracy gradually emerged, Fijian leadership would not be confined to Fijian Chiefs, therefore encouraging the inclusion of the Legislative Council of Commoner Fijians.
