Rauf Raif Denktaş (pronounced Denktash; born January 27, 1924) is a Turkish Cypriot (A native or inhabitant of Cyprus) political leader.
He was the first president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (additional info and facts about Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) (TRNS) until 2005, having served four five-year terms in that office.

Denktash will have to conclude that accession to the EU for the Turkish Cypriots, however favorable the negotiated deal being offered, is not the wiser course.
Denktash's argument is that since 1983, Turkish Cypriots already have their state, and in as far as sovereignty is the undisputed authority to exercise power, their sovereignty too.
Denktash and his chosen successor must remain at the helm of the Turkish Cypriot state to guide the fortunes of the Turkish Cypriots and ensure that they coincide with the interests of Ankara.

Rauf Denktash, in another outburst of intransigence, has turned down yesterday an invitation by the UN Secretary General to resume the search for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem on September 12 in New York.
Denktash will review his position, accept the Secretary-General’s invitation and proceed to the peace talks, with a view to move towards breaking the current stalemate and finding a settlement based on the UN resolutions.
Denktash has not accepted the UN Secretary General’s invitation to talks on 12 September and added that the Commission considers that the window of opportunity for reaching a solution before accession remains open and encourages all interested parties to undertake all efforts with this aim in view.

However, the younger Denktash joined Talat in pledging that the new government would attempt to reach a settlement by the time Cyprus becomes an EU member on May 1 through talks focusing on a paper being prepared in Ankara concerning changes to the Annan plan.

In that way, Denktash won, in the sense that he will be able to stay on as negotiator, but he may not have won the game in respect of public opinion - in other words, the Annan Plan is still on the table.
I would support Serdar Denktash’s ideas that some kind of coalition between all the parties should be formed, because when it comes to signing the agreement (the Annan Plan), there should be some kind of legality.
For Rauf Denktash, although the two men do not get on personally, they share similar views and so, he would probably, accept, if not even find preferable a government led by Eroglu.

Denktash, 80, was a leading figure in Cypriot politics in the 1960s and has been in charge of the republic, recognised only by Turkey, since the Turkish invasion of the north of the island in 1974.
