Vargas retained his title by stopping a bloodied Marquez midway through the 11th round, winning his 17th straight pro fight but having to go past the seventh round for the first time in his career.
Marquez, a close friend and 1992 U.S. Olympic teammate of De La Hoya, taunted Vargas in the days before their fight by giving him a T-shirt with De La Hoya's picture on the front.
Though Vargas used his superior speed to connect much more frequently than Marquez and never was in trouble, he lost momentum after receiving a low blow in the sixth round that cost Marquez a point.
