The death of Raul Roco this morning ends a political career that at various points seemed full of promise, yet ended ignominiously with a feeble showing in the 2004 presidential election.
Although Roco was briefly the front runner in opinion polls, there was always a sense that once FPJ declared and Gloria got her campaign together the portly Bicolano would be left wheezing in their slipstream.
To cap it all, Roco’s trip to Texas for medical treatment in the midst of his campaign was disastrously handled—instead of attracting public sympathy (as might reasonably have been expected) he ended up looking shifty and dishonest and his campaign never recovered.

Roco’s other brothers are Sulpicio Jr., a former Camarines Sur congressman, and Facundo or "Ding." His sisters are Josefina, Rosario (who is a nun), Maria Cristina, Stephany, Concepcion and Lourdes (deceased).
Last Christmas, Roco gave this reporter and colleagues a copy of his 12-track compilation of his favorite songs entitled, "A Message of Hope: Raul Roco, Christmas 2004." The songs are being played at his wake.
