		John Morton was born in the New Sweden colony in modern-day Pennsylvania, the descendant of Matti Marttinen of Rautalampi, Savo, Finland.
		He was a farmer and surveyor, and active in politics, rising to become Speaker of the Pennsylvania House, and a delegate to the Second Continental Congress.
		In Rautalampi, today’s John Morton (portrayed by American re-enactor J. Nathan Bazzel) laid a wreath at the Delaware Memorial Statue in the city park, visited the Church, Library and Museum, and portrayed John Morton’s role in the vote for independence to a large crowd of local residents, including descendants of the Marttinen family.

		In honor of the celebration of the Finnish Parliament’s 100th year anniversary, John Morton presented a copy of the Declaration of Independence to the Finnish people and the Speaker of the Eduskunta Paavo Lipponen along with a letter from Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell congratulating the Eduskunta in honor of its 100 year anniversary.
		In Rautalampi, Morton, Franklin and I visited the Delaware Statue in memorial to those Finns who chose to undertake the difficult voyage to America in the 1640s.
		I presented a bouquet of flowers in their honor and after a tour of the city’s landmarks we met with Rautalampi’s citizens to discuss the significance of John Morton in American history as well as the developments surrounding the birth of the Declaration of Independence.

		John Morton the younger’s great-grandfather was Martti Marttinen (also known in Swedish style as Marten Martensson, written with the “Swedish o”, which likely accounts for the eventual anglicized form of the name).
		He and others from Rautalampi had moved for a time to Varmland, Sweden, and then in 1654 on to join the New Sweden communities in what are now the states of Delaware and eastern Pennsylvania.
