This week, we take a look at the Ravenloft project, which has been in development for nearly two years by a dedicated team of scripters, builders, and developers, who are using custom NWN content developed specifically for this setting.
Yet, it is my opinion that choosing an already published setting, such as Ravenloft, makes the work a little harder as we have to strive for perfection, more than we would if we had chosen to base our persistent world on a place we made up ourselves.

The affected planes are the Demiplane of Dreams and the Elemental Planes of Earth, Air, Water and Fire, the tainted areas are mentioned in the latest version of Planescape, the tainted Demiplane of Dreams creates the Domain called the Nightmare Lands, while from the Elemental Planes arise the Demiplanes of Grave, Mist, Blood and Pyre.
Currently Ravenloft is licensed to third-party publisher, White Wolf Game Studio, who publish material compatible with the d20 System under their Sword and Sorcery Studio imprint.

Ravenloft's campaign setting wasn't that great of a book, reveling to much to the player and not leaving much for the referee.
Ravenloft Dungeon Masters are the dark powers that control the interaction of the domain's various darklords, denizens and drones with the player.
Ravenloft likes the idea of free will, and with player characters being the largest collection of willed individuals, prophecy in the Dread Domain is sketchy, at best, unnerving at the worst.

Ravenloft, set in a remote, mountainous land inhabited by superstitious peasants, gypsies, and the Gothic castle of the vamire himself, mirrors the early, Transylvania-based chapters of Stoker's novel.
Similarly, Ravenloft II draws its inspiration from the English setting of Dracula, and even duplicates in considerable detail the pastoral geography of Whitby.
When the Ravenloft campaign setting was developed, the events of Ravenloft II were retconned so that Strahd was present and disguised as a human alchemist, and did not die at the module's conclusion.

Ravenloft cannot be played alone; it is a backdrop against which to play Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, not a game itself.
A Lord of Ravenloft will often get a page or more on his or her piteous story, but less than three-quarters of a page is devoted to the Domain they live in.
First edition Ravenloft, in the fl box, is now virtually impossible to find, and is a slightly less useful resource than second edition.

I *am* a major fan of Ravenloft - I've been with the campaign world since it was released in 1992, and began DMing adventures not long after - so I eventually caved in and took a look at the d20 version of it.
Thankfully, the Kargatane have saved Ravenloft from becoming totally extinct, but this book will be of limited interest to those familiar with the campaign setting.
The book is neat and if you like Ravenloft you should have it if for no other reason than as a collectable and a good read but don't look for it to help you run a great campaign or give you all the answers.

Since that time, many souls have joined the doomed count in Ravenloft, many domains have opened their doors, and the people go about their lives.
The only real beef I have with the story of Ravenloft is the lord of Sithicus, my all time favorite dread knight was replaced due to legal battles.
For those of you who don't know Ravenloft, but want to spice up your D&D games with some gothic horror, come get some.

It has the Ravenloft feel to it, which is VERY DIFFERENT from the other game settings.
Ravenloft isn't about heroic figures defeating evil and living happily ever after - it's about people standing alone against the dark, even though the dark will always win.
My brother picked up Heroes of Horror yesterday and I would have to say that it promotes many of the same ideals as Ravenloft does, however, I think it's purpose is to help you infuse a more horrific, fear-inducing flavor into any existing campaign or adventure.

There is a race native to Ravenloft that is statistically the same as half-orcs.
Drow: Drow are not native to Ravenloft, and must either be from Greyhawk, the Forgotten Realms, Spelljammer, or Planescape.
Duergar: Duergar are not native to Ravenloft, and must either be from Dragonlance (as daergar), Spelljammer, Greyhawk, Planescape, or the Forgotten Realms.

The Gazetteer series of Arthaus for Ravenloft is an ambitious project that I personally hope will address some of my grievances with the campaign setting.
Ravenloft Gazetteer Two follows the style of a single red gemstone (blood drop?) that the inside of shows the map of the regions going to be covered therein.
Ebb the Dragon is a mistaken inclusion as she is...well a Dragon in Ravenloft.

I have played in three short games involving Ravenloft, and it was inspirational for my Oneiros game.
The interesting twist was that I suggested that all of the PCs should be related or childhood friends who were returning to their home town.
It was set in the demi-plane of Ravenloft as detailed by the original supplements, but the rule system was a modified version of the SAGA card-based role-playing system from "Dragonlance: The Fifth Age" RPG.

Actually it was lucky I had a bit of time on my hands and didn't wait too much longer, because my small party of adventurers arrived at the grand abode of Lord Dhelt in the nick of time.
And speaking of quests, there aren't many side quests in Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession, as most of the time you'll be on the path mapped out for you in the various journals.
Running away is often a good option, and you can trap creatures at the 'end of their leash' so to speak, or behind furniture and pick them off.

Chapter Two is packed with information and begins by explaining the roles of the various races in Ravenloft and introduces a new race, the Caliban, which essentially replaces the Half-Orc.
Characters are given an Outcast Rating, based on their race and certain other things, which is basically a negative modifier to certain checks, such as "Bluff" and "Gather Information," and a positive modifier to "Intimidate" checks.
Chapter Four discusses travel in Ravenloft, introducing "Mistways," which are more or less stable "roads" in the Mists that seem to lead from one particular domain to another particular domain more often than not.
