Portage County is named for the portage between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas Rivers.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 14.30% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who were 65 years of age or older.
Portage County is arranged as a 4x5 grid of 20 rectanges: 18 unincorporated townships containing 9 cities and villages; and two incorporated townships which are fully occupied by one city each.

The first Ravenna mail route was established in 1802 and the first school opened in 1803.

The Cleveland Rd. trail head is the initial phase of an overall plan to connect Kent, Ravenna, Kent State University, Brady Lake and Franklin and Ravenna Townships with approximately 13 miles of asphalt and crushed limestone trail.
Portage County Fitness Challenge is supported by a Community Investment Grant from the American Cancer Society, Ohio Division, Medical Mutual of Ohio and Ravenna Parks and Recreation.

The Portage County Engineer is responsible for the county's highway consisting of 372 miles of county road and 169 county owned bridges.
The Portage County Engineer is also responsible for the Portage County Tax Map Department, which is located on the 3rd floor of the Portage County Administration Building.
Highway and bridge projects undertaken by the County Engineer are financed from the county’s share of the income from motor vehicle registration fees and motor vehicle fuel taxes with assistance in the form of specific project grants from the Federal Highway Administration and the Ohio Public Works Commission.

The Village is located 13.5 miles east of Ravenna, Ohio (the seat of Portage County) on State Route 303.
Windham is perhaps best known as the site of the “Ravenna Arsenal” established on 21,427 acres of Portage County property, including 5,700 acres from Windham Township, in 1940 at the onset of World War II.
Originally established as a township, the Village of Windham was incorporated with the State of Ohio in 1892 and remained part of the Township for over 100 years until the County Prosecutor determined that inside millage tax revenues would be lost if the corporate limits of the Village and the Township were not separated.
