Topic: Ravina

In the News (Fri 17 Feb 12)

  Ravina's biography parallels upcoming movie
Ravina explores Saigo’s personal history, and also places him in the tumultuous context of 19th century Japan when the last remnant of the country’s feudal system—the samurai—passed out of existence.
In grand terms it was a conflict between the old-world values of the samurai (honor, duty, heroic courage) and the increasing technological influence of the West.
This is the first time Ravina has written for a general audience, and he found the process a bit different.

Ravina recounts the tumults that resulted in Saigo's acquiescence in revolt, capturing the protagonist's struggle with loyalty and showing American readers the quality of enigmatic nobility that makes Saigo a well-known historical figure in Japan.
Ravina's The Last Samurai is an excellent study high on specifics in an academic subject which is often superficial and generalized.
Ravina's book is encouraging in that the author is not afraid to tell us what we, as a sympathetic reader, would be afraid to hear.

In formulating strategies to promote and control economic growth and to increase the peasant population, domains drew heavily on their claims to semisovereign authority and developed policies that anticipated practices of the Meiji state.
