After a hiatus, the Rawhide Kid got revamped for the ramping-up Marvel by writer Stan Lee, legendary penciler Jack Kirby and inker Ayers.
Fury and His Howling Commandos, The Rawhide Kid was now a freewheeling romp of energetic, almost slapstick action across cattle ranches, horse troughs, corrals, canyons and swinging chandeliers.
The Rawhide Kid reappeared in the four-issue limited series Blaze of Glory (2000), by writer John Ostrander and artist Leonardo Manco, and a 2002 four-issue sequel, Apache Skies, by the same creative team.

Guardian Unlimited Books | By genre | Observer review: The Rawhide Kid by Ron Zimmerman and John Severin
Much of the current controversy surrounds Marvel's The Rawhide Kid, a 'gay western' title launched earlier this year and soon to be published as a graphic novel.
The Kid is a postmodern makeover of a defunct Fifties character, originally inspired by the popularity of the Rawhide TV show.
From his debut in the mid 50s, the Rawhide Kid battled the outlaws of the Wild West as part of a popular western-themed stable of titles, including The Two-Gun Kid and Kid Colt.

Dixon's comments were in the context of the Rawhide Kid as a children's character and he was commenting on the Larry King show with Stan Lee.
As kids we all saw that Mickey had Minnie, Kermit had Miss Piggy, Popeye had Olive Oyl, etc. Again, these weren't graphic depictions of straight sexuality--in cartoons the raciest thing you'd usually see is two characters smooching with a heart over their heads.
Now, I don't have any kids, but for what it's worth I see a lot of adults talking about protecting children from media, and what it looks like to to me is that they want society as a whole to do it rather than doing it themselves.
