This South American fish is often kept in freshwater tropical aquariums.
The x-ray fish is quite tiny, and only grows up to five centimetres long.

Ray (fish) - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The largest are the manta rays, also known as devil rays and devilfish, due to the horns on their head.
Rays are flat-bodied, and, like sharks, are a species of cartilaginous marine fish, meaning they have a boneless skeleton made of a tough, elastic substance.
Ray's gill slits lie under the pectoral fins on the underside, and a shark's are on the sides of the head.

 The Fish, Part IV
The ray-finned fish, also called the actinopterygians, are the group of fish that dominate both the fresh water and marine (salt water) environments today.
The name "ray-finned" comes from the fact that, unlike the lobe-finned fish, their fins do not have lobes but are supported by bony rays that grow straight out from the body.
They were mostly small fish, and throughout the Palaeozoic Era (570 to 230 million years ago) they were rather insignificant freshwater fishes.

Chesapeake Bay Program - Animals and Plants - Cownose Ray
As Smith stood spearing fish with his sword in the shallows of the Bay off the mouth of the Rappahannock, he stabbed a ray which pierced him in the wrist with its toxin-laden spine.
Described as a flattened shark, all rays belong to a group of animals which lack true bone; their skeletons are composed of cartilage.
The rays seem to be cavorting but actually are using rapid wing movements to churn the bottom sediment to uncover hidden clams and oysters.

 ADW: Actinopterygii: Information
Fish development is known for its confounding terminology, so there are many gray areas within these major categories, and, as with many other animals, many species tend to defy classification into discrete categories.
Nearly all bony coral reef fishes produce pelagic young (meaning they live in the water column for a period of time before settling on reefs), and the length of the stage is highly variable, from only a week in some damselfishes to greater than 64 weeks in some porcupine fishes.
Pheromones allow fish to recognize specific habitats (such as natal streams in salmon), members of the same species, members of the opposite sex, individuals in a group or hierarchy, young, predators, etc. Some groups in dominance hierarchies even associate the scents of individuals with their particular ranking.

 Blu-ray Review: Big Fish | High-Def Digest
To be fair, 'Big Fish' definitely isn't for everyone, and you should use Burton's other films as a measuring stick to determine your own likely enjoyment of this one.
I find it to be more personable and accessible than many of his other fairytales, but others may have problems with the pulpiness of the lush fantasy world Edward creates in his stories, and the purposefully overwritten and overplayed flashback sequences.
Presented in 1080p on a dual-layer disc using the MPEG-2 codec, 'Big Fish' is a purposefully inconsistent visual experience and I'll critique it as such.

 Ray-Finned Fish Provolves / Acties
Actinopterygian or Ray-finned fishes (as opposed to lobe-finned, from which all Terragen land vertebrates are believed ultimately to be derived) were not originally considered by many to be promising candidates for provolution - being cold-blooded, small-brained, generally non-social, and lacking fine manipulators or anything that could easily be adapted as such.
The earliest fish provolves, both ray-finned and otherwise, were generally larger species from warmer waters, and domestic species such as chinese carp and goldfish.
All fish provolves (ray-finned and otherwise) known to date have retained eir fully-functioning gills and the ability to draw oxygen from water at least as well as eir non-provolved cousins.
