Ray (2004/I)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
It's a celebration of the life of Ray Charles that must be seen by all of his fans.
Two of the main dramatic focuses of the picture are Ray's infidelity on the road and his heroine addiction.
Jamie wore prosthetics during the entire filming of the movie that made him unable to see, so if you wonder why he acts like he's blind so well, it's because he was for the movie.

Ray - Scathing Reviews for Bitchy People
Ray’s passion for his music was right up front, in his beatific smile and spasmodic rocking, it was as though there was too much music in him to direct it all into his fingers; he looked ready to pop.
When we do see Ray taking an important stand, becoming the first performer to refuse to play a segregated venue in the South, he’s convinced to do so by a stranger in a space of 15 seconds — it’s as if Rosa Parks had flipped a coin to choose her seat on the bus.
Ray goes into a clinic to kick his heroin habit and we watch dumbfounded as he hallucinates a sentimental reunion with his dead mother and brother in which they forgive him and chastise him at the same time.

 Movie Review: Ray
But his mother refuses to let either Ray or herself consider his blindness a handicap, and so that her hopes for her son might still be realized she sends him off to a school for the blind.
In fact, at one point in the movie, he mentions a life where he might be found holding out a tin cup and dismisses it as something his mother told him was unacceptable, an opinion with which he all too obviously agrees.
Ray is rated PG-13 for the "depiction of drug addiction, sexuality, and some thematic moments." Most kids, even those into their teens, probably aren't going to like this movie much anyway.

Ray Movie - The Hollywood News
Ray is a new bio-pic about the late (and legendary) musician Ray Robinson aka Ray Charles.
Ray traces Charles’ life to superstardom, but also stops along the way to give us glimpses into his tragiedy-filled childhood (including his going blind at a very early age) ala flashbacks, a look at the various loves of his life, and an ugly peak at a nasty heroin addiction that almost ruined his life.
Ray is also peppered with some terrific supporting performances including a likable Curtis Armstrong (you may remember him as Booger from Revenge of the Nerds) as an Atlantic Records executive, and Clifton Powell as a sincere tour bus driver who would go on to manage Ray Charles.

Music is what Ray Charles is all about, and the music that he made, the impact that he made, despite all the obstacles (self-imposed or not), stands the test of time.
As Ray, Foxx had appliances on his eyes to resemble them being closed and most scenes also sunglasses even to block the nuance of his facial expressions.

AlterNet: Movie Mix: Race and 'Ray'
Ray, however, almost literally flips the script, blending content and form in a way that only can be described as "fl." Only Charles Burnett's 1990 To Sleep With Anger comes close, and Anger, despite an all-star pairing of Danny Glover and Mary Alice, went unnoticed at the box office.
One of the major themes in Ray Charles' work was his combining of blues and gospel music into a single piece, bridging a secular-spiritual split that had divided the fl community since the days of the slavery-time cotton fields.
Particularly in Ray Charles' pivotal conversation with his mother and George near the end of the movie, as he is trying to kick his heroin habit, Ray treats those spiritual beliefs with both a respect and a matter-of-fact naturalness that the usual behind-the-hand tittering is not possible when those scenes come on the screen.

 Ray Movie Review
Ray is, quite simply, one of the most outstanding biographical movies that I have ever seen and, by far, one of the better movies that I have seen this year.
Nevertheless, this was a strength of the movie and not a flaw and I found the music in this movie to be as much of a supporting character as some of the supporting actors.
But, more importantly, this is a movie that will provide its viewers with an insight into the life and times of one of the most influential and courageous musicians of the 20th century.

"Ray" in fact turns out to be a proudly conventional film that combines an involving true story, irresistible music and a charismatic performance in a way that makes us not only forgive but actually almost relish how standard the presentation is.
One of the striking things about "Ray" is the way Foxx's performance gives the uncanny impression of watching the real Charles reliving his life on screen.
In this as in all things, "Ray" may be too by the numbers, but with Jamie Foxx out front, this is one film that knows how to make it all add up.

Ray, Taylor Hackford's biopic on the famed, influential musician, offers small glimpses into the legend and life of Ray Charles, but otherwise is a pretty paint-by-numbers approach that screams cable movie.

Movies about artists rarely provide meaningful insight into the process their subjects undergo to achieve creative breakthroughs and Ray is no exception.

If last year saw the rise of the feature-length, left-of-centre documentary, then this is destined to be the year of the sprawling, Oscar-friendly biopic, with The Aviator, Alexander and 'Kinsey' leading the way.
Still, all of this can almost be overlooked thanks to the mesmerising performance by Jamie Foxx, who recently outshone Tom Cruise in Collateral, and who here captures all of Charles' physical and verbal idiosyncrasies so perfectly that you never for a moment imagine he is merely acting.
One of the best films I've seen in a long time, Ray is not only inspirational story about one individual's triumph over the obstacles in his life, but it features masterful cinematography and an unforgettable soundtrack.

Whether you ever listened to Ray Charles beyond his Diet Pepsi jingles or not, this is simply a damn good movie that's well worth the effort.
The story basically chronicles Charles' life from 1948 to around 1963, then does a quick skip way ahead at the end that makes the very ending slightly forced and unsatisfying, but that could also be simply because it's just hard to want the flick to end anyway.
