Combs' dismissal from Feud was one of many events that ultimately led to his suicide in 1996.
Combs checked into the psychiatric ward of a Glendale, California, hospital, and hanged himself in the closet with bedsheets on June 2, 1996—his wife's 40th birthday.

Rod Roddy filled in during the Combs era during the summer of 1991, and Art James also served as a fill-in announcer during the Combs era during November 1989.
The scoring was similar to the 1984-1985 season (1-1-1-1-2-3) or the Combs' regular CBS/Syndicated version from late 1989-1990 (1-1-1-2-3) in the finals, with the first family to reach $400 winning the game instead of $300.

Ray Combs is (was) a creepy little midget that scared me when I watched it in the mid to late 80s and Louie Anderson makes me so nervous and annoyed now that I refuse to watch.
Combs had the show as close to what it was in it's prime in the first Richard Dawson days, Dawson came back and proved that sometimes you can't always go back home, and Anderson is in there proving that some of the greatest shows of all time can be sunk because of it's host.
Ray Combs was an excellent host and a worthy replacement to the bottomless pit of charm known as Richard Dawson.

Well, I was traumatized today by the news that Ray Combs, host of "Family Feud (Challenge)" and "Family Challenge" had died.
Ray's humor was impeccable; unlike Richard, his sarcastic moments seemed less biting, and he seemed to have a genuine care for the families on the program.
When Ray left the show in 1994, I was saddened to hear that he had a life-threatening accident with a car, but was glad to see that he'd come back with Family Challenge on FAM.
