Their format was typically to satirize the medium in which they were performing, such as conducting radio or television interviews, with off-the-wall dialogue presented in a generally deadpan style as though it were a serious interview.
Goulding generally used the same flat voice for all of his women characters—perhaps the most memorable of these was Mary McGoon, home economics adviser, who offered bizarre recipes for such items as "ginger ale salad" and "mock turkey".
In 1949, Goulding, as Mary, recorded "I Want To Be a Cow in Switzerland"', which soon became a novelty hit and is still occasionally played by the likes of Dr.

According to Ray Goulding, the billing "Bob and Ray" came from their first radio show "Matinee with Bob and Ray" which they thought sounded better than "Matinob with Ray and Bob".
Bob and Ray were also known as "the two and only".

Both men capitalized on their uncanny ability to intuit what each other was thinking to carve a small niche in the field of entertainment, generating big laughs by gently skewering and mocking the banality and pomposity of the business in which they had devoted both their careers: radio.
For Bob and Ray fans that are only familiar with their network offerings on NBC, CBS or NPR, the programs make for fascinating listening, offering a revealing insight into the workings of local radio during the 1940s.
Bob and Ray’s one-of-a-kind brand of comedy enabled the team to transcend radio; they entertained audiences along the Great White Way in 1970 with their stage hit "The Two and Only" and appeared in several feature films as well.

Bob and Ray - SternFanNetwork   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding were a comedy duo that began in radio in the late 1940s with a daily 15-minute show titled "Matinee With Bob & Ray." They continued on the air for over 40 years on NBC, CBS, the Mutual Broadcasting System, and NPR, ending in 1987.
Howie and Robin, around the WNBC and early WXRK days, decided to goof on Bob and Ray by deeping their voices and pretending to be the duo who acted homosexual around each other.
I believe the excuse given to fine them was that they used to tout they they had such deep voices because their balls were so huge.
