Ray Harroun was declared the winner in a time of 6:41:08 with Mulford second in 6:46:46, and Bruce-Brown third in 6:52:29.
To quail the protests of other drivers who were concerned that Harroun would not be warned of cars approaching, he invented what is considered to be the first use of the rear view mirror (though some evidence indicates this was not the first use of such a devise).
Harroun was a fine gentleman, a champion driver and a very great development engineer, and I wouldn't want him to suffer any embarrassment nor the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

And, unbelievably, Richard Ray "Dick" Harroun, the 86-year-old son of Ray Harroun, winner of the first Indianapolis 500-Mile Race in 1911, showed up in the pits for the first time since 1990.
Harroun took a particular interest in Calkins and recorded pictures of him on the track and in the pits.
Harroun, the only surviving son of the first Indy winner, also got an opportunity to drive a van around the Speedway oval.

If Ralph Mulford were alive today, he could saddle up on a stool in the lounge at the Brickyard Crossing Resort and argue that he beat Ray Harroun in 1911.
Harroun was engaged in a tremendous battle with Mulford when, 340 miles into the event, a tire let go on Harroun's Marmon Wasp.
Mulford protested the order of finish, claiming that he had lapped Harroun when Harroun's tire went flat, but his complaint fell on deaf ears.

In 1952, forty-one years after winning the first 500, an aging Ray Harroun marveled as cars raced through the turns at almost 100 mph.

As per the custom of the day, all cars except Harroun's carried riding mechanics who, among other things, helped the driver keep track of other vehicles during the race.
Unable to find a mechanic to ride with him, Harroun installed a mirror on his car so he could view what was happening behind him and be alert to any cars overtaking him.
