Jazz Standards History: Biography (Ray Nance)
Ray Nance was an integral part of the Duke Ellington orchestra from 1940 to 1963 although he took a break in the early ‘40s to lead his own groups.
Nance himself developed his own distinctive style on plunger when he earlier replaced Williams who had learned to use the plunger in the style of Buber Miley.
Nance was a virtuoso jazz violinist and Ellington took care to feature him on many of the band’s numbers.

Body and Soul - Ray Nance - Song Listings
This is a very unusual date by Ray Nance, as he sticks exclusively to violin with an occasional vocal.
Nance swings like mad through "Get Happy" with some hot licks from Grimes and Lucas, and delivers a poignant "Body and Soul" in a duet with Hanna.
But the masterpiece of this long unavailable LP is Nance's dirge-like duet with Hanna of "Take the 'A' Train" (which Nance had earlier performed at Strayhorn's memorial service); it is difficult not to be moved by this emotional arrangement, which contrasts starkly with typical recordings of it.

Ray Nance | Body and Soul
Ray Nance recorded Body and Soul, his first album as a leader, in May 1969, almost thirty years after he took over Cootie Williamstrumpet chair in the Duke Ellington orchestra, but only about two years after Billy Strayhorn’s death in May 1967, and mere days after Coleman Hawkins’ in May 1969.
Nowhere is Nance’s facile virtuosity more beautifully on display, bringing to mind his sublime violin solo on the Ellington band’s “Blue Serge” from 1941.
An admirer of Smith, Nance nevertheless leaned toward South, as is evident in the delicacy and refinement of his approach on this record.

Ray Nance, trumpet soloist on Duke Ellington’s first recording of “Take the A Train,” was also a wonderful violinist frequently featured in Ellington’s band.
Nance later recorded the piece as a duet with pianist Roland Hanna in an emotional, moving performance that may quite possibly be his best work on violin.

I can only say I was completely disgusted by CBS studio host Jim Nance in the Superbowl post-game interviews Sunday night especially in regards to the stance he took in the pregame show.
After a piece about Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis who was accused of a double murder the night of the Superbowl last year, Nance and the rest of the CBS studio team discussed why Lewis was still facing questions about his role in the murders in Atlanta.
Nance had the chance on the national stage to put Lewis on the spot, to ask the questions that he has been avoiding for months and finally make him account for his lying and doubletalk.

Flirtibird is an excellent number from the "Anatomy of A Murder" score, and it is entrusted to Nance, becoming in a sense a concerto for cornet.
It was soon identified with Eay Nance, whose cornet solo became an integral part of the performance.
In this interpretation the vocalist is the multi-talented Ray Nance, and it is his cornet in the first chorus.

Ethel Ray Nance served Du Bois as his West Coast secretary and coordinator for four decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s.
Her son, Glenn Nance, has recently presented to the Library 107 letters to his mother from Du Bois.
But there is significant added value to this collection of letters: Ethel Nance wrote a running commentary on all of this material, setting it in context and explaining some of the less obvious references in the correspondence.

 Duke Ellington: At the Alhambra
The band is top drawer, a selection of unique musicians who could provide the Ellington ensemble sound while also offering individual solo voices that would attract and hold the interest of the listener.
The sax section, led by Johnny Hodges, includes Gonsalves, Harry Carney, Jimmy Hamilton, and Russell Procope, while the trumpet section of Ray Nance, Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, and Shorty Baker is superb, as are trombonists Quentin jackson, Britt Woodman, and John Sanders.
For whatever reason, things get off to a ragged start on "Take the 'A' Train," which sounds like a barely adequate high school ensemble until Ray Nance comes in with a unifying solo.

With a band of Duke's greatest veterans--alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges, baritone saxophonist Harry Carney, trombonist Lawrence Brown, and Ray Nance on trumpet and violin--it's classic small-group Ellingtonia with one essential difference.
The latter becomes a delightful dialog focused on Nance's violin and Hawkins and Ellington's inspired accompaniment.

Duke Ellington: Blues in Orbit ---Ink Blot Magazine
Ray Nance (the only trumpet because of band restructuring) and Johnny Hodges offer the most rewarding solo contributions.
Ellington's typically devilish piano introduces "Pie Eye's Blues," followed by a mighty chorus from Nance and a surging finish by Hamilton on tenor with the band urging him on.
The band also revisits classics from the Ellington songbook: Nance shows his violin prowess on "C Jam Blues" before growling through "In a Mellotone." The ballad "Sentimental Lady" is in Hodges' capable caress.
