Ray Oyler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oyler made his major league debut with Detroit on April 18, 1965 and would go on to be their sometime regular, but often defensive replacement shortstop until 1968.
Oyler was the regular Tigers shortstop in 1968, appearing in 111 games, and was arguably the best defensive shortstop in baseball at that time.
After Oyler retired from baseball he settled in the Seattle area, managing a bowling alley in Bellevue and working for Boeing.

 Ray Oyler | BaseballLibrary.com
The archetypal "good-field, no-hit" player, Oyler relinquished the Detroit shortstop job to centerfielder Mickey Stanley to strengthen the Tiger offense in the 1968 World Series.
Still, Dick McAuliffe called him "the best shortstop I ever played with." Seattle fans, feeling Oyler was the Pilot most needy of support, organized the "Ray Oyler Fan Club" in spring training.
Oyler almost ruined it by homering to win the Pilots' first home game.

Archived Weblog Entry - 08/23/2003: "Cooperstown Confidential; August 22, 2003; by Bruce Markusen"
Ray Oyler (Shortstop): In the 1968 World Series, the weak-hitting Oyler lost his starting shortstop job to Mickey Stanley, a converted center fielder who figured to give the Tigers more of an offensive threat in the Series.
After the Series, the Tigers left Oyler and his.135 batting average unprotected in the expansion draft, which paved the way for his selection by the Seattle Pilots.
Oyler played occasionally for the Halos, then became a player-coach for their Pacific Coast League affiliate at Triple-A Salt Lake City, and then finished his career with the PCL’s Hawaii Islanders before retiring in 1973.

So with the American League pennant clinched and two weeks left in the season, Smith asked Stanley to play the last 9 games of the regular season at shortstop, the first time he had ever played the position.
Oyler did not bat and appeared in only four games as a defensive replacement-- the four games the Tigers needed to win the series.
Stanley returned to play 59 games at shortstop the next year, while Oyler was allowed to be drafted by the expansion Seattle Pilots.

The Harvard Crimson :: News :: Impossible Dreamers Drop Boston Opener to Detroit
Ray Oyler popped up, but Detroit's right-handed pitching ace Earl Wilson slashed a line drive into the right-center field alley to produce a run.
Before the horrible inning was over, Willie Horton got a wind-blown double to center, Freehan another scratch single both off the hapless Culp--and Oyler a run-scoring single off reliever Lee Stange.
Wilson complemented his batting efforts (two for five with an RBI and a run scored) with an adequate four hitter, spiced by eight strikeouts.

Re: World Series - Tigers vs. Cardinals? - NazNet Community
Ray Oyler was the SS most of the season, but he couldn\'t hit his weight (and he only weighed about.150), so in the World Series, Mickey Stanley, normally a CF, started at SS, with Oyler coming in for late inning defense.
The best hitter on the team, statistically speaking, was a no-neck pinch-hitter named Gates Brown, who hit about.400 that year.
They lost a close Game 5, then got blasted in Game 6 (Ray Washburn was awful).
