While in the hospital being treated, Ray sang to amuse and entertain himself and the other patients, and once he was released he began performing in earnest, mostly at local (Texas) clubs before moving to Los Angeles.
Over the next couple of years, Ray released several singles, including a song that would become a Peggy Lee classic, "Fever," before hitting the Top Forty in 1959 with the lovely "The Wonder Of You." This tune would later be recorded by his friend and fellow RCA label mate Elvis Presley.

Ray Peterson told me a story about how, on one of his many appearances on the hit music variety television show, "Shindig," in the mid 60s, Elvis Presley telephoned him.
It seems that it was the 10th anniversary of Elvis Presley being in the music business and on that special "Shindig," broadcast, Ray Peterson had performed 4 of Elvis Presley's songs.
Over lunch Elvis told Ray how much he had enjoyed Ray's performances of his songs and he wanted to know if it would be alright with Ray, If he recorded one of Rays songs, "The Wonder of You," on his next album.

Sadly, Ray was diagnosed with cancer about two years ago.  Like all his other battles, he fought this one gallantly.  As recently as three months ago, he was still on stage singing his hits.
But, humanly speaking, this wasn’t a battle that Ray would win.  Last week at the funeral home, I visited his wife Claudia and spoke with his son.  I was impressed by the number of music industry folk who had made the thirty-mile drive to pay their respects.
In the '60s he was a talent booker who worked with Ray on lots of occasions.  Later, as the Beach Boys' manager, Fred hired Ray as a supporting act.  We reminisced about Ray and some of the hard things he’d endured.
