Schalk was quick behind the plate, and is credited as being the first catcher to back up first and third base on throws from the infield or outfield, though that's a dubious claim.

 1919 World Series Preview
We would have looked back on it and used would-be Hall of Famer Joe Jackson's.375 average as an affirmation of his greatness, wondered how Red Faber's presence may have affected the outcome and marveled at Eddie Cicotte's mastery in the wake of a 29-win season.
We would have allowed that the leadership of second baseman Eddie Collins and catcher Ray Schalk led the White Sox to an easy victory over the upstart Cincinnati Reds, or perhaps would still be amazed by the Reds' upset of the powerful team from Chicago.
The Sox boasted a lineup that included three eventual Hall of Famers-Collins, Schalk and Faber-and three others-Jackson, Cicotte and pitcher Lefty Williams-who were forging Hall of Fame careers.

Black Sox Blog » 1917 White Sox Diary - April
The White Sox dropped their third straight game in what was a bizarre ending to the 2-1 loss.  With the bases loaded, catcher Ray Schalk stopped reliever Dave Danforth mid-windup and that resulted in the go ahead run scored on a balk.
A nice start by Lefty Williams went to waste.  He gave up just one run on four hits in eight solid innings.  Eddie Collins was the only White Sox hitter with two hits and Eddie Murphy scored the only run when he came in to pinch hit for Williams in the eighth.
The White Sox lost their first game of the season behind a lackluster outing by Red Faber.  The right hander went the distance but he gave up four runs on eight hits and five walks with four strikeouts and the key hit against him was a two run homer by George Sisler.

Chicago White Sox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1914, the Chicago White Sox were 70-84, but had a solid core of players who would stay on to be regulars on the 1917 World Championship team such as catcher Ray Schalk, shortstop Buck Weaver, and pitchers Eddie Cicotte, Red Faber and Reb Russell.
On August 9 against the New York Yankees, the White Sox surpassed 2 million fans for the eighth time in franchise history and for the second consecutive year (1983, 1984, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, and 2005).
Also, on August 30 versus the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the White Sox surpassed 2.5 million-plus fans for the first time since 1993, and for only the fourth time in franchise history: 1991, 1992, and 1993.
