Rayene Stewart "Ray" SIMPSON was born at Chippendale, New South Wales, on 16 February 1926.
Simpson was next posted to 1st Special Air Service Company in November 1957 and served with that unit until selected as one of the initial group of advisors for the Australian Army Training Team, Vietnam (AATTV) who left by air for Vietnam in July 1962.
Warrant Officer Simpson's gallant and individual action and his coolness under fire were exceptional and were instrumental in achieving the successful evacuation of the wounded to the helicopter evacuation pad.

Simpson’s duty on that day was to man a Vickers machinegun, identical to another gun which, several hours earlier, had been defended to the death by Privates Hardy and Jones, who were both posthumously awarded the George Cross.
Simpson was later posted to the 2/3rd Pioneer Battalion and served near the end of the war with the 26th Battalion, AIF.Simpson was demobilised in January 1947.
Simpson was posted to the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment, in January 1954 and served with that unit in Malaya for two years from October 1955.

SIMPSON, PERCY (1789-1877), surveyor, engineer and administrator, was born on 5 March 1789 in Canada, son of Major Noah Simpson of the 31st Regiment of Foot, and reputedly christened Pierce.
Simpson later described his responsibilities as unlike those of any other in the colony: commandant, chaplain, commissary and engineer, he was paid on productivity rather than a set salary.
Simpson's ability to manage convict labour and his administrative and engineering skills were recognized by successive governors who valued his 'zeal, assiduity and ability, as well as respectability of demeanor in private life'.

RAYENE STEWART SIMPSON was born at Chippendale, New South Wales, on 16 February 1926.
Educated at Carlingford and Dumaresque Island Public Schools, Taree, New South Wales, he joined the second AIF on 15 March 1944 and was sent to the 41st 2nd Infantry Battalion, a 'holding' unit for young soldiers under nineteen years.
On 16 May 1966 Simpson left the Army for a second time but re-enlisted in Saigon a year later for his third period of service with the AATTV.

SIMPSON, RAYENE STEWART (1926-1978), soldier, was born on 16 February 1926 at Redfern, Sydney, third child of New South Wales-born parents Robert William Simpson, labourer, and his wife Olga Maude, née Montgomery.
He served on Morotai, and at Tarakan, Borneo, and Rabaul, New Guinea, and was demobilized on 20 January 1947 in Sydney.

Warrant Officer Class II Rayene (Ray) Stewart Simpson VC during his third period of service with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) 1968-1969.
On 6 May 1969 Simpson was then serving in Kontum Province on the Laos/Cambodian border as commander of the 232nd Company of the Mobile Strike Force of the 5th Special Forces Group in a search and clear operation when the enemy was encountered in a series of action over six days.
A total of 1000 members served with AATTV during the entire period of the conflict - 1962 to 1972.

Warrant Officer Simpson served in the Australian Imperial Forces from March 1944 to January 1947.
Warrant Officer Simpson was assigned to the first Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in August 1962 and returned to Australia in August on 13 July 1964, from the First Special Air Service Company.
He was immediately posted to the advisory group with United States and Vietnamese Special Forces in the mountainous jungles of the North West.

As of Smith's death, Beharry is one of only 13 living recipients of the Victoria Cross and is the first British soldier to receive the medal since 1965.
He is also the first living recipient of the Victoria Cross since Australians Keith Payne and Rayene Stewart Simpson were honoured for actions in Vietnam in 1969.
The bronze for the medal comes from two captured Chinese-made cannons used by the Russians at Sebastopol during the Crimean War.

Beharry is the first recipient of the Victoria Cross since the posthumous awards made to Lieutenant Colonel H. Jones and Sergeant Ian John McKay for service in the Falklands War in 1982.
He is the first living recipient of the VC since Keith Payne and Rayene Stewart Simpson, both Australian, received the award for actions in Vietnam in 1969.
Johnson's citation states, "For his repeated extreme gallantry and unquestioned valour, despite intense direct attacks, personal injury and damage to his vehicle in the face of relentless enemy action, Private Beharry deserves the highest possible recognition."
