Barney Bigard was one of the most distinctive clarinetists in jazz and a longtime asset to Duke Ellington's orchestra.
Although he took clarinet lessons with Lorenzo Tio, Bigard's initial reputation was made as a tenor saxophonist; in fact, based on a few of his recordings (particularly those with Luis Russell), Bigard was number two behind Coleman Hawkins in the mid-'20s.
Raymond Burke had a long career and was considered a reliable player in his native New Orleans where he spent virtually his entire career except for a brief period in the late 1930's when he was in Kansas City.

He joined the latter's band in June of 1959, in time to appear on the first of his Roulette Records recordings, At the Roundtable, where he distinguished himself as a soloist and an integral member of the band, scarcely two weeks after coming on board.
He stayed with Teagarden until late 1962, sharing the vocals (including a spot-on impersonation of Louis Armstrong that he did on-stage, as part of "Rockin' Chair") with him and, along with the leader and clarinetist Henry Cuesta, all of the solos, also writing a few notable pieces for the group as well.
After leaving Teagarden's group, Goldie led his own band for a time, and by the late '60s was working with Gleason in Miami Beach, as well as playing gigs of his own -- in many different jazz and pop idioms -- in the south Florida region, at various hotels and restaurants.

While she is joined throughout by banjoist Emanuel Sayles, bassist Placide Adams and drummer Paul Barbarin, the frontlines change, with four songs featuring trumpeter Alvin Alcorn, trombonist Jim Robinson and clarinetist Louis Cottrell; the remaining four numbers have trumpeter Don Albert, trombonist Frog Joseph and clarinetist Raymond Burke.
Overall, this set gives listeners a good sampling of the state of New Orleans jazz circa 1963 and is one of the few recordings of Barrett mostly without the regular members of what would become the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (Robinson and Sayles excepted).

That's not my idea of good jazz." After some negotiations, Raymond agreed to play the concert when the "virtuoso" assured him that he would behave and play real jazz.

Jazz by Sidney Arodin composer of Lazy River
It was a meager notice, but it was in keeping with the comparative obscurity in which Sidney Arodin lived his half century.
For instance, some of the New Orleans Jazz Band records on Banner and other labels undoubtedly featured Arodin's clarinet and he once told Raymond Burke that he played on "Hopeless Blues" by Jazzbo's Carolina Serenaders (Cameo and Muse 232) with Phil Napoleon, trumpet, and probably Miff Mole, trombone, and others.
It was originally believed that Arodin was the clarinetist on the Halfway House Columbias from masters 142006 through 145011 but it has been established that Charlie Cordella recorded them.
