Raymond John Leppard, one of the foremost British conductors of the 20th Century, has also been film score composer and a leading scholar and conductor in the movement to restore older music to the stage in performances of authentic style.
His editions of these operas and his conducting them brought them back to the public often for the first time in three hundred years, and was a tremendous boost to the movement to bring back Baroque opera and other music of composers of the century before Bach.
However, Leppard is not a part of what is called the "authentic" or "period" instrument movement, working with the instruments that can be found in the world's opera orchestras of today.

Classical Net Review - Raymond Leppard - American Dreams
Since then, Leppard has continued as one of the finest conductors of his time - a supreme interpreter (non-HIP) of Handel and the Baroque and an incredible musician on everything else he's turned his hand to, including a landmark recording of the Virgil Thomson opera The Mother of Us All.
Leppard keeps the lid on and gets the orchestra to build and fall back with fine judgment - the interpretively difficult part of the piece.
Leppard knows how to tell the musical tale, especially evident in the Gershwin, which can pall in less committed performances.

We play the best of him – people in their enthusiasm mustn’t push the lesser work – and audiences and performers alike enter his world with it unique qualities and leave it enriched.

Hildegard Behrens: with Raymond Leppard & the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra
Conductor Raymond Leppard introduced Wagner's big sound gently to the audience with the stirring, melodic overture to Rienzi, the 5-act opera, now rarely staged, about the last of the Roman tribunes, written when Wagner was 27 years old.
And just as Hildegard Behrens on these evenings once again proved herself a great Wagnerian, Raymond Leppard in brilliantly unleashing the Wagnerian forces of his orchestra showed that the city famous for its Indy 500 should be as justly famous for its Symphony.
