Raymond Mhlaba (February 12, 1920-February 20, 2005) was an anti-apartheid activist and leader of the African National Congress (ANC).
In 2004 Mhlaba was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer, and in December doctors discharged him from a private clinic saying there was nothing they could do for him.
Mhlaba is survived by his wife, three sons and five daughters.

Raymond Mhlaba, a staunch trade unionist and member of the South African Communist Party since 1943, became the first ANC leader to be arrested in the 1952 defiance campaign for leading supporters through a ‘Whites Only’ entrance to a railway station in Port Elizabeth.
Mhlaba was a founding member of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the military wing of the ANC and the SACP, and was appointed Commander in Chief of the unit in October 1962 following a period of military training in Mao’s China.
