As veteran Pittsburgh firefighter Raymond Washington and his comrades headed to a row of burning houses Wednesday afternoon in the Hill District, they heard reports of people trapped in the flames and could only pray that Washington's daughter and grandchildren had gotten out in time.
He later learned that Sherri Washington and her two daughters were visiting friends at the time that the four-alarm fire erupted in the 600 block of Chauncey Street.
Sherri Washington said she didn't know her father was at the fire until she and her daughters — Shayla, 14, and Shakya, 3 — returned to the burning home and saw him and other members of Engine Company 3 trying to put out the flames.

The Raymonds must have loved to tell the story of their wedding on Dec. 29, 1897, for the tale was kept alive and finally incorporated in a newspaper announcement of their fiftieth anniversary celebration.
The Raymonds won the Shropshire case, won on appeal to the state supreme court, won again in the trial court on a new complaint, and were going through another appeal process when a settlement was reached: They paid her $400 damages and $113 in expenses on Oct. 30, 1909.
