Rayok - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The expression "to talk rayok" (говорить райком) means to speak in a rhymed, humorous way, to patter.
Rayok, both show and talk forms, was an occupation of wandering artists called rayoshniks.

DSCH 9 Shostakovich CD Reviews - Songs
Rayok is ostensibly an operetta, a brilliant piece of musical theater, and a wicked send-up of the antiformalist campaign of 1948.
In the performances of Rayok on each of these two CDs, Mochalov again demonstrates his knack for characterization by singlehandedly assuming each of the roles originally written for four basses.
The success of Rayok's production, however, rests not so heavily on the differences in these very effective arrangements as it does on the vocal performances of those involved, especially that of bass, Alexei Mochalov, who is the featured soloist in each of the performances.

DSCH 22 Shostakovich CD Reviews - Satires and other vocal works
The long-awaited restoration of Rayok to the catalogue in a brand new performance is one of the highlights of this fourth instalment of Delos' series.
Rayok, the only work in Shostakovich's catalogue with a libretto of his own authorship, may have begun as a private spoof to be heard only among an inner circle of friends.
Rayok is alternately referred to as either a cantata or an opera, depending on whether a solo bass or different players sing and act out each of the main roles.

Antiformal Rayok, satiric concert opera, for 4 basses, speaker, chorus & piano
The only thing that is certain as far as the dating of the score goes is that it was a closely held secret of the Shostakovich family until 1989 and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
That is because no one in his or her right mind would have allowed Antiformalist Rayok to be performed publicly: the work was a virulently satirical portrait of the Composers' Union Congress of 1948 that condemned Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Khachaturian as "formalists," a offense that was nearly a capital crime in those Stalinist days.
Although musically Antiformalist Rayok is little more than a pastiche of various popular song styles and hardly worthy of the composer of the Fourteenth Symphony, the work's merciless excoriation of those who tortured Shostakovich makes it a central document in the composer's psychological dossier.

An interview with Nikolai Kachanov, January 2003
We meet the exact opposite of this composition in Antiformalist Rayok, a one-act opera which is an extraordinarily daring musical satire on the absurd structures of the Soviet bureaucracy.
The word "rayok" in Russian means "little paradise," used ironically here in reference to the "heaven" attained by these buffoonish Party officials for their service to Stalin.
The text of Rayok (which Shostakovich also wrote) is an assemblage of intentionally fatuous platitudes, which these politicians recite in their conference speeches.

After Alfred Schnittke (Capriccio 67016) and Avro Part (Capriccio 67079), Spivikov and the Moscow Virtuosos now turn to the most important Soviet composer of the 20th century: Dmitri Shostakovitch.
The other, titled "Anti-formalist Rayok" was never published while Shostakovitch was alive - it is a very fl datire about the outrageous and life-threatening demands composers, like all other people working creatively, were subjected to during the Stalinist era.

The whole thing was done with wonderful theatricality, and ended with Tchivzhel dancing with the choir and Leiferkus conducting.

This Satiric Opera was written from 1940 to the second half of the 60s.The first version had two characters, Edinitsin and Dvoikin, prototypes of Stalin and the sectretary of the communist party.
After the 13th symphony of S. was banned in the USSR, there was no chance to perform "Rayok".

Shostakovich - A Musical Cold War Rages On
The more important issue is divorced of the memoirs: the question of whether the music of Shostakovich was straight-faced ideology or a moral resistance to tyranny.
This question, if not enlightened by the more controversial Shostakovich works like Symphony Nr 13 (subtitled 'Babi Yar', a vocal work of dissident proportions) and Rayok (the private satire on Stalin and his cronies), might well be answered by the din of voices that has chorused an overwhelming affirmation of the composer's moral courage.
These individual testimonies were published by Elizabeth Wilson in 'Shostakovich: A Life Remembered', a book that Volkov's critics curiously try to avoid addressing.

Almost everything here has only one other available recording (namely, everything but the King Lear music) but the exception is what makes this disc unusual: Antiformalistic Rayok.
Completed around 1958, shortly after the Second Congress of Soviet Composers attacked Shostakovich for "formalism", this appears to have been solely a means of letting off steam for the beleaguered composer and was never published in his lifetime.
A 17-minute long piece, Rayok (which means "gallery" in Russian) features three Party Officials (here called "NumberOne", "NumberTwo" and "NumberThree" and performed by the same soloist) who have a meeting to discuss the theme of "Realism and Formalism in Music Today".

90, 1952] - others see him as one of its most implacable opponents - for did he not write The Anti-Formalist Puppet Show [Rayok] - a furious, fearless musical caricature of Stalin and his henchmen strangling culture?...
Yakubov notes that Shostakovich's work is rooted in the events of Soviet history - he refers, for example, to From Jewish Folk Poetry as a "direct response to growing official anti-semitism" - and observes that, as time moves on, the music risks losing "some of its sharp sense of reference".
