Dragon's Hoard - The Romance of the Rose
Rose wreaths were awarded by the Romans as a mark of honour for a major military success, and indeed in later ages for every minor victory.
The rose was a symbol of life because of its beauty, a symbol of death because of the inevitable withering of its blooms and a symbol of eternal life because of its association with the Gods.
This correlates with the Grail as the Heavenly Rose of redemption, and is cognate with the chivalric ideals.

The white rays issuing from behind the Rose at the inner angles between the arms, are the rays of the Divine light issuing and coruscating from the reflected light of Kether in its center.
The cross may be cut out of cardboard and the colored portions may be painted or formed by pasting on portions of colored paper of the required shape.

The Cross: Its Origin and Significance (No. 39)
The handled cross (or cross potencée) is in the form of a T produced by suppressing the upper limb of the Latin cross (which we have seen in the sun symbols derived from the Chaldeo-Assyrian systems).
The symbolism that arose from the cults was that of the cross, and the incidence of the propitiation of Hecate (Artemis, Rhea or the Mother Goddess) and Hermes at cross-roads was aimed specifically at the control of spirits of the dead.
Concerning the symbolism of crosses, of which the varieties are numerous, we shall confine ourselves to indicating that they depend upon the shape of their arms and the ‘rhythmic direction’ which these arms suggest (as in centrifugal, centripetal, neutral or rotary crosses).

The idea was suggested to me by seeing several rather delicate roses growing and blooming very well at Breeze Hill in partial shade, while they had failed miserably in full sunlight a few feet away.
The outer bed is filled with a miscellaneous lot of roses, mostly newer varieties and a group of seedlings of new crosses fresh from the greenhouse.
Cross tells me in a letter written later that the beds were made according to Hole's directions in "A Book About Roses", a copy of which he had presented to gardener.

We look in spirit at the rose and say to ourselves: In the red sap of the rose, I see the green color of the plant-sap changed to red; and the red rose follows still, not less than the green leaf, the pure, unimpassioned laws of growth.
I can let the red of the rose be for me a symbol of a blood that is the expression of chastened impulses and passions which have thrown off their baser part and resemble in their purity the forces that are at work in the rose.
Let this fl cross be for you a symbol for the baser elements that have been cast out of man's impulses and passions; and at the point where the beams of the cross meet, picture to yourself seven resplendent bright red roses arranged in a circle.

Byzant Symbols - the Rose Cross
The Rose Cross is a comprehensive and complex symbol used by many Western Mystery Orders, and the one illustrated above is similar to that used by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (founded in England in 1888).
Surrounding the inner cross are 22 petals containing the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet, each colored according to Kabbalistic attributions.
Between the arms are rays from the central Rose, and the main symbols contained within are the letters I.N.R.I. This is an abbreviation of the Latin Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews), the notice that Pilate had fastened to the cross when Christ was crucified (John 19:19).

And therefore the first thirty degrees from that point where the Sun crosses the equator, are called Aries, the next thirty degrees are called Taurus, the third thirty are called Gemini, and so on through the twelve signs.
The last time when the starting-point in the Intellectual Zodiac agreed with the Zodiacal constellation was in A,D. A year after these points were in exact agreement, the Sun crossed the equator about fifty seconds of space into the constellation Pisces.
