 Razorlight - Razorlight / self-titled (Album Review)
While Razorlight’s debut Up All Night didn’t quite live up to the "masterpiece" status with which it was pegged by front man Johnny Borrell, its fusion of pop hooks and gutsy, rock star attitude was enough to at least make the album interesting.
Tired, perhaps, of the many, much deserved comparisons to The Strokes and The Libertines, Razorlight shifted directions for its self-titled, sophomore effort by trading its ’70s street cred for an ’80s alt-rock shine, but the results are less than satisfying.
On Before I Fall to Pieces, for example, the group buries the arena-ready bombast of The Who inside a glossy arrangement that was plucked directly from Katrina and the Waves, and although Pop Song 2006 is an homage of sorts to the Talking Heads, it ultimately falls flat.

It is genuinely surprising just how poor Razorlight's second album is. Granted, they've exactly never been torch-bearers for progressively minded or interesting guitar music, but they did at least manage to knock out the occasional decent tune.
Razorlight ("we named this record Razorlight because we feel this album really captures the truth of what this band’s all about," presumably) is initially most striking for its abrupt stylistic U-turn from the lively retro-rock pop of Up All Night to what is, at best, bland 70s soft rock.
This would be less problematic if Razorlight was more than a one-man show, but Borrell's overcooked vocals sit proudly at the front of the mix like a toddler showing us his cock.

Dominic Masters has sunk back into obscurity after one appalling album with The Others, Carl Barat is still going strong, if rather ordinarily, with Dirty Pretty Things while Pete Doherty can't seem to decide whether he wants to be remembered as a genius songwriter or a tabloid joke figure.
Their debut album, Up All Night, was an unqualified triumph, mixing the frantic chaos of the Libertines with some classic songwriting touches that resulted in endlessly listenable tracks such as Golden Touch or Rip It Up.
