The reaction is one of the least understood of the basic physical concepts, perhaps because it is often poorly taught or incorrectly described in many publications (including in textbooks), or because Newton's laws of motion may appear counter-intuitive (see that article for a historical perspective or a statement of all three laws).
The corresponding reaction is the gravitational force that mass exerts on the planet: this has nothing to do with the steel cable; in fact, the reaction exists even in the absence of the cable.
Yet, the gravitational action and reaction remain the same, since the masses involved have not changed, and the distance between the center of mass of the object and the center of mass of the Earth is modified so slightly that any variation in the gravitational force is immeasurably small.

In their attempts to identify reaction forces, our scientists all too often begin with the false expectation that if real, the reaction force in question should be capable of acting as the cause of some event in the predicted direction.
In Universal Physics we recognize that the outward-directed centrifugal forces experienced on a "merry-go-round" are all acceleration/Reaction forces being caused by and providing support for the inward-directed centripetal acceleration/Action forces that are the forces responsible for causing the inward-directed centripetal acceleration of the orbiting objects.
Since the supporting reaction force from the astronaut is only present during the astronaut's acceleration and then always a match for the rocket's variable acceleration/Action force, one is safe to conclude that the downward-directed reaction force from the astronaut is an acceleration/Reaction force.

This dose of realism comes courtesy of a fascinating book I've been reading called "The Physics of Superheroes" by James Kakalios, a physicist at the University of Minnesota who happens to be a big fan of comic books.
I grew up being exposed to physics, although hardly any of it rubbed off on me, which is why I'm writing for this newspaper instead of doing any heavy thinking.
But even in "The Physics of Superheroes," I had to wade through a discussion of quantum mechanics, one interpretation of which suggests the existence of parallel universes.

The slowest reaction in the CNO cycle is the fusion of a proton with a nitrogen-14 nucleus to produce oxygen-15 and a gamma-ray.

 The reaction time, delay distance, braking time and braking distance and deceleration rate are displayed for student verification using the standard kinematics equations for velocity and linear acceleration.

The first time I noticed inconsistencies in the addressed theoretical concepts was when I got involved with the basic theories in ionospheric physics in order to interpret some upper atmospheric EUV emission for my Ph.D. thesis.
I submitted the paper in 1990 to Journal of Plasma Physics and in 1992 to Journal of Geophysical Research (together with Airglow-paper discussed further down below); in both cases it was rejected after several appeals in which the original objections of the referees were clearly invalidated.
It is the latter which will eventually limit the development of a chain reaction which could result from the re-absorption of the radiation (if the test tube does not blow up before that).
