Reading is a town and unitary authority (the Borough of Reading) in the English county of Berkshire.
Reading is an important business centre in South East England and is often referred to as the capital of the Thames Valley, with the headquarters of some major British companies and the UK offices of a number of major foreign multinationals, especially in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Oracle, Xansa and Sage.
Reading and the surrounding area is divided between the parliamentary constituencies of Reading East and Reading West.

 Reading Minster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Reading Minster, or the Minster Church of St Mary the Virgin as it is more properly known, is the oldest ecclesiastical foundation in Reading, Berkshire.
Although eclipsed in importance by the later Reading Abbey, Reading Minster has regained its importance since the destruction of the Abbey and is now the seat of the Bishop of Reading.
In the 11th century the Danes sacked Reading and the nunnery was destroyed.

Reading remained in the hands of the Parliamentarians until the end of September 1643.

Reading was essentially for Parliament during the Civil War, and was originally garrisoned, in 1642, by Henry Marten MP, Lord of Hinton Waldrist and several other North Berkshire Manors.
The Reading hangmen would stop here for a drink with their victims before they were led to Gallows Tree Common in Earley.

They may indeed consider that the minster church is not the equal of great buildings like the churches at Sherborne or Milton Abbey, but it fits its immediate context very well, and it looks good when viewed from outside of the town - e.g.
William Loringe was one of the Canons of Wimborne Minster in the early part of the reign of Richard II.
The initials T.B. on the 3rd and 4th bells [both by Samuel Knight of Reading] are those of Sir Thomas Bankes, the remaining letters on the 3rd being the initials of Matthew Raindle and Thomas Portell commemorated on the 4th.

John was educated at the Reading Free School, later called the Grammar School, which was housed in the old Abbey guesthouse near St.
In October 1589, at the usual age of sixteen, John was sent to the traditional University College for Reading boys, St. John's in Oxford, founded only thirty-four years earlier by another Reading clothier, and Lord Mayor of London, Sir Thomas White.
In Reading, they built "a strong house of Brick....with a fair garden adjoining" on land in Minster Street sold to them by the benefactor's brother, William, and called it the 'Oracle' after the man of vision: John Kendrick.

William Man was born in 1778 at Reading, Berkshire, the second son of John and Sarah (Baker) Man, and was baptized on 17 June at St Mary the Virgin, Reading.
Three letters to the editor of the Christian Observer, on a review in the journal, of a work entitled the Principles of population and production, as they are affected by the progress of society, with a view to moral and political consequences.
This is the spot in Reading Cemetery where William Man is buried.
