Found art - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Found art derives significance from the context into which it is placed, thus blurring the traditional distinction of what is art, and what is not art, and challenges the nature of art.
Marcel Duchamp coined the term readymade in 1915 to describe his found art.
His Fountain, a urinal which he signed with the pseudonym "R. Mutt", shocked the art world in 1917.

 Tate | Glossary | Readymade
Readymade is the term used by the French artist Marcel Duchamp to describe works of art he made from manufactured objects.
His earliest readymades included Bicycle Wheel of 1913, a wheel mounted on a wooden stool, and In Advance of the Broken Arm of 1915, a snow shovel inscribed with that title.
The theory behind the readymade was explained in an article, anonymous but almost certainly by Duchamp himself, in the May 1917 issue of the avant-garde magazine The Blind Man run by Duchamp and two friends: 'Whether Mr Mutt with his own hands made the fountain or not has no importance.

 Readymade
The term 'Readymade' is used exclusively for those works by Duchamp to which he gave that prefix, whereas there are perhaps other subsequent works by other artists which could be placed in the category he created, so clearly a Readymade, by definition must be made by Duchamp.
The former is a Readymade, the latter, a sculpture.
So it seems we are close to a definition of Readymade, but it is worth noting that some of the Readymades have an additional prefix, and some are specifically not signed with the artist's own name.

The Unfindable Readymade   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
If a so-called readymade consists in the putting together of several objects, even very few, this assemblage would require after all solving a problem of composition, and thus, it is no longer a readymade.
The readymade object was actually proposed as an artwork, but not under the name of Marcel Duchamp, not even under the name of Rrose Sélavy: it was under the name of a non-existant guy called Richard Mutt.
This principle according to which "a readymade is not a work of art for Duchamp, but the subject matter of some of his works" is the mere reason why the objects were not exhibited at this time.

Readymades are composed of manufactured, common, or found objects.
As evidenced by the work of Duchamp, Johns, and Warhol, the readymade has changed and at the same time influenced the concept of "what is art?" Without industrialization and mass production, the readymade would not have had a model to spring from.
